Please Note: The salary range above represents this position’s earning potential. The anticipated hiring range for this position will be $82,352 to $107,102, based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
The Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) Fleet Operations, with the Division of Support Services, inspects, maintains, and repairs fire and rescue apparatus and ensures compliance with local, state, and federal requirements. The fleet is comprised of nearly 400 heavy, medium, and light duty vehicles including pumpers, aerials, rescue squads, and ambulances. The department is seeking to fill the position of Equipment Services Coordinator.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
MCFRS is seeking candidates that are highly skilled with previous experience in managing fleet apparatus and personnel, who perform maintenance and repairs on a variety of specialized medium- and heavy-duty fire and emergency medical services apparatus.
The position is located at a warehouse-type facility located in Rockville, MD. The work is performed in all seasons, regardless of weather, indoors and outdoors, with exposure to environmental factors found in a warehouse and automotive shop. Strict adherence to safety precautions and procedures and the use of appropriate protective devices will be required at all times. This position requires routine off-hour availability by phone and may require work outside of normal business hours, including overnight stays during events, major incidents, etc. The successful candidate will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:
- Ensuring that the MCFRS fleet has enough in-service vehicles to meet the needs of Operations on a 24/7 basis;
- Supervising a Maintenance Facility 24/7, Crew Chiefs, and Technicians with day-to-day scheduling of preventative main DOT inspections of all fire and rescue apparatus, coordinating with vendors and internal and external partners on the repair and maintenance of light and heavy-duty fire apparatus, aerial ladders, ground ladders, pumps, and portable equipment;
- Timekeeping, attendance, and certification and skill record keeping of all shop employees, to include maintaining the records informing shop personnel of the job requirements they must maintain;
- Assigning work and overtime in compliance with operational needs and collective bargaining requirements;
- Assisting in collaborating, designing, managing, and monitoring preventative maintenance and quality assurance progress implemented by Fleet Operations personnel;
- Enforcing to employees the overall effectiveness, efficiency, and safety of the MCFRS Central Maintenance Facility;
- Collaborating with MCFRS Operations leadership address immediate and future needs;
- Ensuring that all MCFRS vehicles meet established DOT, NFPA, manufacturer, and MCFRS standards for maintenance repairs, safety, performance, and service delivery;
- Ensuring that maintenance records are completed and maintained.
- Developing, implementing, and enforcing policies and procedures for Fleet Operations;
- Assisting to ensure that adequate parts and supplies are available to support repairs and maintenance; including monitoring defect reports, feedback, and observations to assess trends;
- Measuring and analyzing data from the fleet management information software system to determine costs, reliability, overall shop efficiencies and repair trends;
- Providing input to the Fleet Assistant Chief and Manager III for technical specifications of new vehicles, including those acquired by the Fire Rescue department;
- Monitoring and addressing warranty and campaign repair issues in cooperation with the Fleet Operations Manager III;
- Answering after-hours phone calls concerning possible emergency repairs of critical Fire apparatus and coordinating the possible same day repair of such apparatus.
- Participating in interviews and selections in the hiring and promotion of personnel and performing other job-related duties as assigned.
- The position is located at a warehouse-type facility located in Rockville, MD. The individual selected for this position considered an "Essential Employee." Essential employees must report to work during a period of general emergency liberal leave.
- The work is performed in all seasons, regardless of weather, indoors and outdoors, with exposure to environmental found in a warehouse and automotive shop. Strict adherence to safety precautions and procedures and the use of appropriate protective devices will be required at all times. This position requires routine off-hour availability by phone and may require work outside of normal business hours, including overnight stays during weather events, major incident.
The selected candidate may need to manage emergency repair calls during nights/weekends
Experience: Eight (8) years of journey level experience in the vehicular repair trade in either light automotive, heavy-duty vehicles and mobile equipment, or commercial transit equipment, or any combination thereof which totals eight (8) years, at least three (3) years of which included supervisory responsibilities.
Education: Graduation from high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland.
Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
Physical Abilities: Ability to stoop, crouch, and crawl into cramped spaces, and occasionally lifting up to fifty (50) pounds.
License: Possession and maintenance at all times of, or ability to acquire, a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
Certification: Possession of, or ability to acquire, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification for air conditioning (transit, heavy and light automotive). Possession of, or ability to acquire, Maryland State Emission Control Certification (automotive only).
The selected candidate will be required to successfully complete a medical exam and a drug/alcohol screening

- T4 Medium-Heavy Truck, Brakes (National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE)
- T5 Medium-Heavy Truck, Suspension and Steering (ASE)
