THE POSITION

The City of Camarillo is seeking a collaborative, technically capable, and service-oriented public works professional to join our team as Assistant Maintenance Superintendent. This is an excellent opportunity for a proven maintenance leader who enjoys balancing field operations, crew development, customer service, and the stewardship of essential City assets.

Under general direction, the Assistant Maintenance Superintendent supervises, coordinates, and participates in a broad range of public works maintenance and construction programs, including streets, landscaping, irrigation systems, trees, traffic control devices, and related infrastructure. The position provides mid-level management oversight and supports the Maintenance Superintendent with operational planning, staffing, budgeting, contract administration, and day-to-day service delivery.

The ideal candidate is an experienced supervisor with a practical understanding of public works maintenance activities, construction methods, equipment operations, field safety practices, and emergency response. They are comfortable leading multiple crews or programs; planning and scheduling work; balancing competing priorities; coordinating contractors; purchasing materials; reviewing invoices; and supporting budget-related activities. This individual leads by example, promotes safe and efficient work practices, and helps crews complete assignments on schedule while maintaining high standards for quality and service.

We are looking for a calm, respectful, and accountable leader who can build trust with employees, address performance concerns constructively, and apply City policies and progressive discipline practices fairly and consistently. Strong communication skills are essential, as this position works closely with staff, other City departments, contractors, and residents. The successful candidate will communicate with professionalism, empathy, sound judgment, and a commitment to responsive public service.

The Assistant Maintenance Superintendent must be highly organized, adaptable, and able to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a clear operational plan. Proficiency with standard business software—including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook—as well as maintenance, work-order, and financial systems is important.

If you are a hands-on public works leader who values teamwork, accountability, safety, continuous improvement, and high-quality maintenance of community infrastructure, we encourage you to apply.
