Overview

Position summary

Banyan Global is recruiting a Labor, Land, and Social Safeguards Specialist (Technical Expert, Level II) for an upcoming Millennium Challenge Corporation procurement and is contingent on an award. The work will support social analysis of commercial agriculture investments, currently in Mozambique but may expand to other countries. Experience in Mozambique or the broader Southern Africa region, and Portuguese language skills, are preferred.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities

  • Identify and assess social risks related to labor conditions, land tenure, and community health and safety.
  • Evaluate risks of child labor, forced labor, and trafficking in persons.
  • Analyze land access and tenure security.
  • Assess occupational health and safety concerns across different demographic groups.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable MCC standards, such as the MCC Counter-Trafficking in Persons (C-TIP) Policy, and with international best practices.
  • Propose mitigation measures to address identified risks.

Qualifications

Required qualifications

  • 10 to 14 years of experience in economic and social analysis, design, and/or implementation, including conducting social analysis or applying it to project design or implementation in a relevant technical field.
  • A bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Experience applying social analysis to labor, land, or social safeguards, gained in low-income and lower-middle-income countries.
  • Experience conducting social risk assessments and recommending mitigation measures.
  • Strong written English. Depending on the country assignment, MCC may also require Spanish, French, or Portuguese.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with social safeguards frameworks such as the IFC Performance Standards.
  • Experience with counter-trafficking, child labor, or forced labor risk assessment.
  • Experience with labor and land risks in commercial agriculture or agribusiness supply chains.
  • Experience in Mozambique or the broader Southern Africa region.
  • Proficiency in Portuguese.
  • Prior experience working with MCC.
