At Macquarie University Health, we are always looking for skilled nurses to contribute to our high-performing perioperative and procedural teams at Macquarie University Hospital, Wallumattagal Campus, North Ryde. We maintain an ongoing talent pool for current and upcoming opportunities across our operating theatres, anaesthetic bays, cardiac catheter laboratory and endoscopy service. If you are an experienced theatre, anaesthetic, cardiac catheter laboratory or endoscopy nurse, or a Registered Nurse with transferable procedural skills looking to consolidate your practice in a teaching environment, we welcome your expression of interest.

About The Role

As a perioperative or procedural nurse at Macquarie University Health, you will care for patients across a broad and complex case mix in a precinct where clinical care, teaching and research operate side by side. Our teams support specialty lists across neurosurgery and spine, orthopaedics, cardiothoracic and interventional cardiology, general and bariatric surgery, colorectal, urology and robotic surgery, ear, nose and throat including cochlear implants, ophthalmology, breast and endocrine, gynaecology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, vascular surgery, interventional radiology and endoscopy. Whether your strengths sit in the instrument and circulating roles, anaesthetic nursing, interventional cardiology or endoscopy, you will add to the capability of established teams delivering safe, efficient and patient-centred care.

Depending on your experience and the area you are appointed to, your key areas of responsibility may include:

  • Delivering intraoperative care in the instrument (scrub) and circulating (scout) roles across specialty surgical lists, including set-up and troubleshooting of robotic and advanced surgical technology, instrumentation, loan sets and implant and prosthesis traceability.
  • Providing anaesthetic nursing support through induction, maintenance and emergence, including anaesthetic machine checks, airway equipment and consumables preparation, airway management support, patient monitoring, vascular access and regional techniques.
  • Undertaking scrub, circulating, panel and recording roles for diagnostic and interventional cardiology procedures, including haemodynamic monitoring, access site and sheath management and post-procedure observation.
  • Supporting endoscopy services, including pre-procedure assessment and bowel preparation review, procedural and therapeutic device assistance, endoscope cleaning, reprocessing and tracking in line with national standards, and discharge criteria and education.
  • Applying perioperative and procedural standards for aseptic technique, surgical count, specimen management, infection prevention, medication, contrast and blood product administration, consent verification, safety checklists and documentation in the electronic medical record.
  • Caring for the sedated or anaesthetised patient, including safe positioning and transfer, pressure injury prevention and temperature management, while participating in emergency responses, radiation, laser and equipment safety, support of students and new staff, and quality improvement and audit activities.

Opportunities arise at Registered Nurse level, and from time to time at senior and specialist levels. You are welcome to register your interest through this talent pool regardless of level. Please tell us the level and area you are seeking in your cover letter.
