Job Title: Head of Religious Education (RE) – Secondary School
Location: South Essex
Start Date: January 2026 (or sooner if available)
Contract: Full-time, permanent
Salary: MPS/UPS + TLR (in line with experience)
About the Role
Local Education are working in partnership with a successful secondary school in South Essex who are seeking to appoint a Head of Religious Education. This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and passionate teacher of RE to take the next step in their career and lead a thriving department.
The role involves overseeing the Religious Education curriculum across KS3–KS4 (with some KS5 delivery) and leading a small, committed team of subject specialists. The school has a strong reputation for academic progress and pastoral care, and is looking for a leader who can inspire students and staff alike.
Responsibilities:

Lead the RE department, driving standards and outcomes across all key stages

Line-manage and support departmental staff
-
Develop schemes of work and ensure consistency of teaching and assessment

Deliver high-quality lessons in RE, ensuring excellent progress for all pupils

Contribute to whole-school leadership initiatives and ethos
Requirements:
-
QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) or equivalent

Experience teaching RE to GCSE (KS5 desirable)

Proven track record of strong classroom practice and student progress

Experience of leading or supporting departmental improvement

Strong organisational and interpersonal skills
