Job Title: Head of Religious Education (RE) – Secondary School

Location: South Essex

Start Date: January 2026 (or sooner if available)

Contract: Full-time, permanent

Salary: MPS/UPS + TLR (in line with experience)

 

About the Role

Local Education are working in partnership with a successful secondary school in South Essex who are seeking to appoint a Head of Religious Education. This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and passionate teacher of RE to take the next step in their career and lead a thriving department.

The role involves overseeing the Religious Education curriculum across KS3–KS4 (with some KS5 delivery) and leading a small, committed team of subject specialists. The school has a strong reputation for academic progress and pastoral care, and is looking for a leader who can inspire students and staff alike.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the RE department, driving standards and outcomes across all key stages

  • Line-manage and support departmental staff

  • Develop schemes of work and ensure consistency of teaching and assessment

  • Deliver high-quality lessons in RE, ensuring excellent progress for all pupils

  • Contribute to whole-school leadership initiatives and ethos

 

Requirements:

  • QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) or equivalent

  • Experience teaching RE to GCSE (KS5 desirable)

  • Proven track record of strong classroom practice and student progress

  • Experience of leading or supporting departmental improvement

  • Strong organisational and interpersonal skills
