Brief Description of Duties

The University of the District of Columbia (UDC), the District’s only public institution of higher education and an urban land‑grant, minority‑serving institution, invites applications for a full‑time, nine‑month permanent faculty appointment in Social Work. This position is housed within the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Program in the Division of Behavioral and Applied Health.

UDC enrolls approximately 4,200 students across its associate, baccalaureate, master’s, and professional programs. The Washington metropolitan area provides an exceptional learning environment for students, faculty, and community partners.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The faculty member will teach undergraduate social work courses aligned with the generalist curriculum, mentor students, engage in scholarly activities, and participate in service at the program, division, college, and university levels. This position is dedicated to the BSW Program, with optional MSW‑related contributions only upon request from program leadership.   1. Teach courses in the BSW professional foundation curriculum, with emphasis on mezzo and macro practice areas such as human behavior, social welfare policy, group work, and community practice.
  2. Contribute to curriculum development, including preparation of syllabi and alignment with CSWE Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS).
  3. Develop and maintain an active scholarly agenda consistent with tenure expectations.
  4. Create and update model syllabi for assigned courses.
  5. Serve as lead faculty for designated curriculum areas.
  6. Mentor BSW students on professional development, career pathways, and field readiness, consistent with faculty responsibilities outlined in the BSW Program Handbook.
  7. Provide leadership and service on program, division, and university committees.
  8. Engage in collaborative research and community‑based projects that include opportunities for student participation.
  9. Participate in ongoing assessment and continuous improvement of program outcomes.
  10. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Assistant Professor: A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:
  1. An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract; and
    At least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience, including two (2) years in an institution of higher education.
    Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.
    When formal teaching experience is limited or absent, the candidate shall be required to demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching.

    Associate Professor: A candidate for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:

    An earned doctorate or the highest appropriate credential in the field of specialization, or experience and achievements comparable to the doctorate;

    A record of scholarship and professional growth; and

    At least five (5) years of full-time teaching experience in an institution of higher education, including three (3) years as an Assistant Professor.

    Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by National Education Association (NEA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference:
A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
 

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
