Description

We are seeking an experienced Technical Artist to join Playdead’s art team. The ideal candidate will have strong technical skills working with Unreal Engine, who thrives on finding innovative solutions to the challenges of simulating a large, fully open world game.

Your responsibility as a Technical Artist will be to support other artists on the team with the technical aspects of the art pipeline, to develop various simulated systems in an open world, and to act as a bridge between art and other disciplines. This may include the creation of Unreal shader graphs, the development of blueprint-based tooling, working with environmental simulations (such as weather, water, sand, etc), and generally assisting with all technical art challenges in our open world game. For all of these tasks, you will work closely with the animators, programmers, sound designers and artists here at Playdead. We are particularly looking for a colleague who enjoys setting their own goals and taking responsibility for their own schedule.

We are working within a highly focused and ambitious vision, which requires adapting to the existing visual style while contributing your own ideas to the whole. More than anything, we are looking for someone who is excited about all facets of game development, as well as being passionate about gaming overall.

What will you be doing?

  • Working within a small but dynamic art team, supporting the technical aspects of the art pipeline.
  • Developing and supporting environmental simulations, such as water, weather, sand, etc.
  • Being the technical bridge between art, animation, programming and sound to help bring an immersive world to life.
  • Collaborating with a dedicated team with high ambitions about visual and thematic design.

Required Skills

  • Experience with Unreal Engine 5 is required.
  • Professional working experience within a 3D game production.
  • A strong portfolio of work which demonstrates a level of mastery in various aspects of technical art.
  • Comfortable using digital tools and software to find innovative solutions for simulating an open world game, with an art style we describe as “stylized realism.”
  • This is a full time position at our studio in Copenhagen, Denmark so you need to be willing to relocate (we offer full relocation support).

Desired Skills

  • Some experience and competence with C++ is highly preferred
  • Great communication skills and ability to work effectively on shared projects.
  • Familiarity with other major game engines.
