Overview

The Writer/Editor produces high-quality editorial content that highlights the research, clinical, and education activities of Yale School of Medicine (YSM). This role contributes both academic and patient-facing storytelling. The position supports digital growth and institutional visibility by producing content that is accurate, audience-centered, AI-informed, and optimized for discoverability across evolving digital environments.

The Writer/Editor pitches, researches, and writes news stories, faculty profiles, feature articles, newsletters, and static web content, and conducts interviews with faculty, institutional leaders, and subject matter experts. The role proactively identifies high-impact story opportunities through relationship-building, careful listening, and ongoing engagement with faculty, departments, and institutional partners. Key aspects include identifying emerging themes, connecting work across departments, and shaping integrated content packages that extend beyond a single story or format.

The use of AI as a regular part of the editorial workflow to support content development and scalability is critical in this role: it will be used for identifying and organizing source materials; generating and refining structured drafts from transcripts, research publications, and validated sources; critically reviewing content for accuracy and tone; and coordinating expert review prior to publication. The role collaborates with editorial, multimedia, and digital colleagues during story ideation and development to support integrated storytelling across written, visual, and video formats. The Writer/Editor also implements content within YSM’s web content management system, ensuring proper formatting, tagging, structured content modules, cross-linking, and optimization for performance and search visibility.

The ideal candidate is a strong writer and editor with a proven ability to conduct interviews and build productive relationships with faculty, clinicians, institutional leaders, and communications colleagues. The role requires intellectual curiosity, strong news judgment, and the ability to independently identify promising ideas and translate them into compelling editorial opportunities. AI fluency is expected but must be paired with sound human judgment. Excellent communication skills and the ability to translate complex scientific and clinical topics into clear, engaging narratives for diverse audiences are essential. Familiarity with digital content channels and the ability to adapt content for different audiences and formats is important, as is a working knowledge of SEO/AEO best practices and structured content principles. A background covering health, science, academic medicine, higher education, or related institutional communications is strongly preferred.
