Job Description:
Reporting to the Head of Special Collections Technical Services, the Special Collections Technical Services Librarian performs a variety of tasks related to the preservation of rare and unique materials. The incumbent is responsible for the conservation of books and other library materials from LSU Libraries' general, circulating, rare, and special collections. The librarian also performs original and copy cataloging of published materials, creates metadata for digitization projects, supervises students processing printed materials, supervises support staff, assists with stacks maintenance duties for Hill Memorial Library, and assists with Special Collections public service duties.
Responsibilities:
- 40% Carries out treatments on library materials using accepted standards for conservation practice and documents the methods and treatments performed. Handles intermediate to complex conservation tasks that require knowledge and expertise in multiple techniques and with a variety of tools. Designs and makes complex, custom enclosures for objects. Tracks materials as they undergo preservation and conservation work. Trains and supervises others in conservation practices and procedures. Assists in the preparation of library materials for exhibition and digitization.
- 20% Creates and edits MARC catalog records utilizing knowledge of standards including RDA, LCSH, NAF, LC classification, and other appropriate thesauri and authority lists used for descriptive and subject cataloging of books, serials, visual materials, cartographic materials, music scores, and audio-visual materials. Performs original and complex description of digitized materials by creating or enhancing metadata records, which involves both accurate descriptive cataloging and the assigning of appropriate Library of Congress subject headings.
- 15% Supervises and trains student workers who perform processing and simple preservation of printed materials, keeps statistics of their work, and pages and shelves books. Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates FTE support staff.
- 10% Staffs departmental service points as a primary contact/reference person for patrons using Special Collections. Interprets and enforces library policies for the security and administration of the collections.
- 10% Performs service to the libraries, university, and/or profession.
- 5% Assists with stacks maintenance duties for Hill Memorial Library. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Master's degree from an ALA-accredited institution.
1 year experience in a higher education setting.
Experience in conservation and preservation; knowledge of book arts, illustration or printmaking.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's of Fine Arts.
Three to five years of related library experience or relevant work experience..
Management experience; teaching or instruction in a higher education setting.
