Job Description
We are seeking a Senior HCL Workload Automation Engineer to support and optimize large-scale enterprise batch processing environments, ensuring business-critical workloads execute reliably and within SLA commitments. This role combines production support, workload automation engineering, batch performance optimization, root cause analysis, and operational automation. The successful candidate will act as a senior technical contributor, driving resolution of complex incidents, mentoring team members, and improving platform reliability through automation and continuous improvement initiatives.
Responsibilities
Your Impact
- Monitor and support enterprise batch processing environments built on HCL Workload Automation (HWA), IBM Tivoli Workload Scheduler (TWS), and Maestro.
- Diagnose and resolve complex batch job failures, application abends, scheduling issues, dependency failures, and file-transfer incidents.
- Perform root cause analysis of recurring production issues and implement long-term corrective actions.
- Design, maintain, and optimize job streams, calendars, dependencies, resource pools, and workload schedules to meet SLA commitments.
- Develop and enhance automation capabilities, including self-healing processes, automated recovery actions, and operational tooling.
- Coordinate production incidents with application, database, infrastructure, and support teams during business-critical events.
- Administer workload automation environments, including agents, scheduling components, security controls, and platform maintenance activities.
- Mentor L1 and L2 support analysts through incident reviews, technical guidance, runbook improvements, and operational best practices.
- Drive service improvements through trend analysis, problem management, operational reporting, and process optimization.
- Author and maintain runbooks, recovery procedures, knowledge articles, and standard operating procedures.
Qualifications
Skills & Experience
- 4-8 years of experience supporting enterprise batch scheduling, workload automation, or production support environments.
- Hands-on experience with HCL Workload Automation (HWA), IBM Tivoli Workload Scheduler (TWS), or Maestro, including job streams, dependencies, scheduling parameters, and Dynamic Workload Console (DWC).
- Strong experience supporting Linux and Unix environments, including process troubleshooting, logs, file systems, networking, and performance analysis.
- Proficiency in Shell/Bash scripting for automation, job execution, batch processing, and operational tooling.
- Experience troubleshooting and recovering failed batch workloads and production incidents in SLA-driven environments.
- Working knowledge of SQL for operational troubleshooting and querying scheduling or application databases.
- Experience with ITIL processes including Incident, Problem, and Change Management.
- Experience using ServiceNow, BMC Helix, or comparable ITSM platforms.
- Ability to perform technical root cause analysis and implement sustainable production fixes.
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across application, infrastructure, database, and operations teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with workload automation platform administration, including scheduling servers, agents, security, upgrades, and patching activities.
- Experience implementing automated recovery workflows, self-healing mechanisms, retry strategies, and operational automation.
- Knowledge of enterprise monitoring and alerting solutions with SLA-based incident detection.
- Experience leading major incident investigations and coordinating cross-functional recovery efforts.
- Previous mentoring, coaching, or technical leadership responsibilities within support or operations teams.
Set Yourself Apart With
- Experience with alternative workload automation tools such as Control-M, AutoSys, Dollar Universe, or Apache Airflow.
- Python or Perl scripting for operational tooling, log analysis, and automation development.
- Ansible experience for agent configuration management and deployment automation.
- Kafka integrations, message-driven scheduling, or REST API-based workload orchestration.
- Exposure to Docker and Kubernetes-based batch processing environments.
- Experience with cloud data orchestration technologies such as Azure Data Factory or Databricks.
- Knowledge of ELK, Splunk, Datadog, or similar observability platforms for batch analytics and proactive monitoring.
- Experience modernizing workload automation platforms through containerized agents and cloud-native architectures.
