Position Summary
Reporting directly to the CEO, the Vice President of Construction will serve as a key member and strategic partner to the CEO and senior leadership team at Habitat for Humanity of Kansas City (HFHKC). This role is responsible for leading all construction and economic development operations in support of the organization’s mission: building homes, communities, and hope.
The VP will provide strategic and operational leadership across homebuilding, homeowner development, neighborhood revitalization, and land acquisition. The VP of Construction ensures the delivery of high-quality, cost-effective homes while maintaining a strong focus on safety, volunteer engagement, and community impact.
Responsibilities
- Leadership & Strategy: Partner with the President & CEO and other senior leadership to translate HFHKC’s mission into strategic construction plans while driving cross-functional alignment with Finance, Development, and Programs; promoting a culture of accountability, inclusion, safety, and continuous improvement.
- Construction & Operations Management: Lead all construction and development activities including new home builds, rehabilitation projects, and neighborhood revitalization initiatives to deliver high-quality, sustainable projects on time and within budget while managing land acquisition, collaboration with municipal officials (engineers, developers, inspectors), and operational innovation by exploring construction methods, materials and energy-efficient practices to improve cost-effectiveness and sustainability.
- People Leadership & Team Development: Build, lead, and develop a high-performing, mission-driven workforce through coaching, talent management, volunteer engagement, and leadership development.
- Financial Management & Operational Efficiency: Oversee budgets, financial performance including cost per home, construction expenses, contracts, capital investments and long-term planning to ensure fiscal responsibility and operational effectiveness.
- Partnerships & Community Engagement: Serve as ambassador to strengthen relationships with municipalities, contractors, developers, funders and community partners while supporting fundraising, grant initiatives by providing project insights and technical expertise and market knowledge as it pertains to advocacy & compliance.
- Compliance, Safety & Risk Management: Ensure regulatory compliance with city, state, federal and OSHA standards, maintain a strong safety culture for staff, volunteers & partners, and mitigate operational, financial, and project-related risks.
- Data, Systems & Performance Management: Use data, KPIs, and reporting systems to measure performance, cost efficiency, quality and homeowner pipeline; drive continuous improvements, decision making and provide transparent updates to organizational leadership.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in construction, operations, or development.
- 3+ years in a senior leadership role leading and developing high-performing teams.
- Current General Contractor license or ability to obtain.
- Strong knowledge of residential construction, land development, and project management.
- Proven experience managing budgets, contracts, and complex projects.
- Experience working in or with nonprofit, community development, or volunteer-driven environments preferred.
- Knowledge of government funding and affordable housing programs preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with construction/project management systems.
