Under general supervision, provides direction over the Drug Screen Collectors; performs duties related to the drug screening of clients; oversees the day-to-day operations of laboratory testing to include ensuring proper compliance and reporting standards; and performs other related duties as required. Reports directly to the Sixth Judicial Court Judge.

Supervision Exercised: 

Provides direction over Drug Screeners.

  1. Witness sample collection of urine for drug and alcohol testing and screening.
  2. Maintain proper chain of evidence over collections, check identifications, and orient new clients.
  3. Provide technical and lead direction over support staff; provide training and on-going support to staff; provide staff training in proper work methods and techniques; scheduling of staff; review work and ensure employees feel safe in their environments and that risk management rules are being followed for everyone’s safety.
  4. Collect samples for testing, and maintain integrity and validity of samples collected, ensure correct identity of clients.
  5. Provide direction and training to Drug Screeners in signing up new clients, checking in clients, posting fees, collecting samples for testing, and performing other duties to ensure safety protocols are followed.
  6. Report progress and non-compliance of issues of defendants to supervising agencies.
  7. Prepare statistical data, correspond with other departments and agencies as needed, and coordinate scheduling of all court-ordered testing.
  8. Correspond in person, by telephone or in writing with clients, attorneys, and employers to disseminate and receive information; receive referrals from other agencies as necessary.
  9. Investigate complaints from clients regarding the services received and handling of cases by determining the facts and circumstances surrounding the complaint and taking appropriate action to achieve satisfactory resolution of the problem.
  10. Assist partner agencies in gathering and processing confidential information including interpreting drug testing results, for use in Court by way of interview, observation, and document review.
  11. Ensure assigned personnel perform duties and responsibilities in a safe and prudent matter that does not expose them or others to unnecessary harm or risk of on-the-job injury.
  12. Prepare and/or process testing samples using laboratory equipment following established laboratory protocols for retrieval, preparation, and processing of specimens. 
  13. Coordinate the process of outside testing and communicate test results with other agencies. 
  14. Responsible for the oversight, operation, and maintenance of all laboratory equipment and supplies following vendor and departmental procedures and protocols; operate, calibrate, and maintain scientific instrumentation by conducting quality checks on equipment regularly; ensure laboratory compliance with accreditation and safety requirements; perform mandatory maintenance and troubleshoot issues with the equipment. 
  15. Manage inventory of supplies including testing kits, chemicals, personal protective equipment (PPE), forensic kits; orders and stocks necessary laboratory supplies; and processes vendor invoices. 
  16. Testify in court as needed regarding drug testing and laboratory policies and procedures.
  17. Maintain and update policy and procedure manuals, records, and other required documentation. 
  18. Respond to requests and questions from staff, clients, and other agencies. 
  19. Work closely with other agencies to relate technical drug-related information regarding test results and explain the process of cross-reactivity.
  20. Document all problems and corrective actions taken when test systems or equipment deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.

Education, Training and Experience: 

Any combination of training, education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to gain the required knowledge and ability is:


  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of customer service experience, preferably in law enforcement, criminal justice, legal environment, or social services.
  • Three (3) years of full-time experience in a scientific laboratory environment processing test samples and maintaining or operating basic lab equipment OR a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a natural, physical, or environmental science or closely related field.


Required Certifications and Licenses:

A valid driver’s license at the time of appointment and for continued employment in this classification.
