THE OPPORTUNITY
This Staff Mobile Engineer, iOS position works onsite in our Alameda, CA location for Lingo.
As a Staff Mobile Engineer, iOS at Lingo, you will lead the design and development of the iOS applications and shared iOS platform components that power our biosensing experience. In this role you will set the architectural direction for the iOS codebase, raise the engineering bar across the mobile team, and take ownership of large, ambiguous initiatives from concept through production.
You bring deep, hands-on iOS expertise and modern Swift architecture practices, and you apply that expertise both to your own code and to how the broader team builds. You are equally comfortable in the details of a performance-critical feature and in stepping back to spot broader technical trends and implications for the product and team.
You will work closely with product managers, architects, and cross-functional stakeholders to translate ambiguous problems into well-scoped technical designs, lead discovery on medium to large projects, and drive the long-term technical strategy for iOS at Lingo. A core part of this role is leading Lingo's transition from React Native to fully native iOS, owning the migration strategy and setting the technical standard the rest of the team follows.
What You'll Work On
Lead and participate in the design and development of complex iOS applications and shared iOS platform components (SDKs, libraries, tooling), ensuring high-quality code and adherence to best practices.
Design and implement sophisticated features in Lingo's iOS applications, analyzing and optimizing app performance, reliability, and scalability.
Define and drive modern iOS architecture standards, including Swift, SwiftUI, Combine/async-await, MVVM/MVI, and modularization.
Own large, ambiguous initiatives from concept to production, establishing long-term iOS technical strategy including modularization, CI/CD, build optimization, and observability.
Participate in managing code and configurations across multiple environments, the release management process, and environment configuration and controls, working closely with the Platform Engineering team.
Lead the discovery phase of medium to large projects to arrive at high-level design, and collaborate with product managers, architects, and other stakeholders to gather requirements and define technical specifications.
Troubleshoot business and production issues, and champion strong observability practices including crash analytics and performance monitoring.
Integrate AI/ML capabilities into iOS applications, including on-device and cloud-powered solutions, to deliver intelligent, personalized experiences while ensuring privacy, security, and performance best practices.
Lead Lingo's migration of the consumer mobile app from React Native to fully native iOS, owning migration strategy, sequencing, and architecture decisions, including how to bridge React Native and native code during the transition, and how to preserve feature parity and app stability throughout.
Evaluate existing React Native components and screens for migration complexity, define native module and screen replacement patterns, and set the technical standard the rest of the iOS team follows during the transition.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
8+ years of professional iOS engineering experience, including significant experience leading the architecture and technical direction of production consumer applications.
Expert-level proficiency in Swift and modern iOS development, including SwiftUI, and current architectural patterns (MVVM, MVI, or equivalent).
Working knowledge of React Native sufficient to assess existing React Native code, plan a native migration, and bridge between React Native and native modules during a phased transition.
Strong track record of leading the full development lifecycle: architecture, coding, testing, CI/CD, release management, monitoring, and maintenance.
Experience partnering with backend teams to design efficient mobile APIs and offline-first solutions.
Demonstrated ability to lead discovery and high-level design for technical initiatives.
Experience championing automated testing, code quality standards, and secure mobile development practices at an organizational level.
Strong collaboration and technical leadership skills, with the ability to work effectively across a globally distributed engineering team spanning the US, Spain, and India.
Preferred Qualifications
Direct experience leading or contributing to a React Native to native migration in a production consumer application.
Experience in consumer health, digital health, or regulated industries where software quality and reliability have direct implications for end users.
Experience integrating on-device or cloud-powered AI/ML capabilities into iOS applications, such as Core ML or equivalent.
Experience with GraphQL.
Familiarity with Bluetooth Low Energy protocols and mobile SDK integration for wearable or connected health devices.
Experience building and maintaining shared iOS platform components, SDKs, or libraries consumed by other engineering teams.
