About the Role 

The Jackson Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated Scientist to join our Core Scientific Services team within the Metabolic Phenotyping Core. This position provides scientific expertise, technical leadership, and operational support for advanced in vivo metabolic phenotyping technologies and services that enable cutting-edge biomedical research across diverse scientific programs, including obesity, diabetes, MASH, atherosclerosis and muscle biology. The Scientist will partner with investigators, research staff, and cross-functional teams to develop, optimize, and implement scientific solutions that support internal and external research initiatives. This individual will leverage technical expertise to evaluate emerging technologies, troubleshoot complex scientific challenges, ensure quality standards, and deliver exceptional scientific service to a broad research community. 

The ideal candidate is an independent scientist with strong technical proficiency, a collaborative mindset, and a passion for enabling scientific discovery through shared resources and innovative technologies. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Design, develop, optimize, and execute in vivo metabolic phenotyping workflows, assays, and methodologies that support core service operations and research objectives. 

  • Analyze, interpret, and communicate experimental data and results to diverse scientific audiences. 

  • Evaluate, implement, and validate new technologies, equipment, and workflows to enhance service capabilities and operational efficiency. 

  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs), quality control processes, and best practices to ensure data integrity and reproducibility. 

  • Troubleshoot complex technical and scientific issues and identify innovative solutions to improve performance and outcomes. 

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support research initiatives, grant applications, publications, and strategic projects. 

  • Train, mentor, and provide technical guidance to research staff, students, and laboratory personnel. 

  • Contribute to the strategic growth and continuous improvement of core scientific services through process optimization and adoption of emerging technologies. 

  • Maintain compliance with institutional, regulatory, and safety requirements. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas: obesity, metabolic disease (including type-2 diabetes, MASH, atherosclerosis), aging, skeletal muscle biology, or islet (β-cell) biology. 

  • Expertise in preclinical pharmacology, including in vivo efficacy, execution, analysis, and interpretation.  

  • Proficiency with indirect calorimetry / metabolic cage systems (e.g., Sable Systems Promethion, or equivalent), Body composition analysis using EchoMRI, DEXA, and/or microCT, core metabolic phenotyping assays, including glucose tolerance tests (GTT), insulin tolerance tests (ITT), and mixed-meal tolerance tests (MMTT), treadmill-based endurance capacity testing.  

  • Hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic and hyperglycemic clamp techniques.  

  • Muscle biology experience is a strong plus. 

Desirable: 

  • Surgical proficiency in transplantation techniques, including grafting under the kidney capsule 

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Master’s degree in biology, Biomedical Sciences, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, or a related scientific discipline required; Ph.D. preferred. 

  • Four (4) or more years of relevant scientific experience supporting research programs, scientific services, core facilities, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, academic, or contract research environments. 

  • Experience with advanced laboratory technologies, instrumentation, and scientific data analysis. 

  • Track record of scientific achievement demonstrated through research contributions, publications, presentations, technology implementation, or project leadership preferred.

Pay Range: $85987 - $143962 per year, dependent upon experience.
