Apprentice Engineer

Overview

The Apprentice Engineer supports the operation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of facility infrastructure and building systems under the guidance of senior engineers, technicians, and facility management personnel. The position serves as a developmental role within the Facilities Operations and Maintenance (O&M) organization and provides hands-on training in the maintenance of mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP), HVAC, building automation, life safety, and utility systems commonly found in federal facilities. Responsibilities typically include assisting with preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, work order execution, and compliance activities. Apprentice Engineers gain practical experience while supporting uninterrupted facility operations and mission readiness.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

• Assist with operation and maintenance of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and utility systems.
• Perform scheduled preventive maintenance activities in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and site maintenance plans.
• Support troubleshooting and repair of facility equipment and infrastructure.
• Conduct building rounds and equipment inspections to identify deficiencies or abnormal operating conditions.
• Assist with monitoring Building Automation Systems (BAS) and Building Management Systems (BMS).
• Complete work orders and document maintenance activities within the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
• Support facility engineers during corrective maintenance and emergency response events.
• Assist with testing and inspection of life safety systems and equipment.
• Follow established safety procedures, lockout/tagout requirements, and environmental compliance standards.
• Maintain tools, equipment, and maintenance records.
• Support contractor oversight activities and coordination of maintenance services.
• Participate in technical training programs and professional development activities.
• Other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, AND LICENSURE:

 

REQUIRED: 

 

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Enrollment in the Apprentice Program with Local 99.
• Basic knowledge of building systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical equipment.
• Ability to use hand tools and maintenance equipment safely.
• Ability to obtain and maintain required federal installation access and security credentials.

DESIRED:

 

• Trade school, vocational training, apprenticeship program
• Secret Clearance
• OSHA 10-Hour Safety Certification.
• EPA Section 608 Certification.
• Familiarity with CMMS platforms such as Maximo, TRIRIGA, AssetWorks, or FacilityDude.
• Exposure to Building Automation Systems (Niagara, Metasys, Alerton, Siemens, Schneider Electric, etc.).
• Experience supporting federal government facilities.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

• Knowledge of preventive and predictive maintenance principles.
• Ability to read basic drawings, schematics, and equipment manuals.
• Working knowledge of facility safety practices and OSHA requirements.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving capability.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary facilities team.
• Commitment to customer service and mission support.

WORK AUTHORIZATION/SECURITY CLEARANCE:

 

DoD Secret or higher security clearance, or the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance. U.S. Citizenship is required.

 

ADDITIONAL QUALIFYING FACTORS:

 

Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance. In addition, a satisfactory background screening, negative drug test, positive references and proof of identity and legal authorization to work in the United States are required.
