Sr Director, Client Partner Counsel - Personal Lines Auto

The opportunity

 

Liberty Mutual is looking for a managing attorney to lead legal support for one of our largest and fastest-moving businesses.

 

You'll lead a small, technically specialized team of lawyers and legal professionals supporting the personal auto operation within US Retail Markets — a $26+ billion business unit — and serve as the senior legal partner to the Personal Auto President and their leadership team. Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel, you'll set legal strategy and direct resourcing against the business's strategic priorities.

 

It's a role for a lawyer who wants both: substantive work on complex and emerging regulatory questions, and a genuine seat at the table where the business makes its decisions.

 

What you'll do

 

Advise the Personal Auto business. You'll be the point person for legal matters across the product operation — insurance product design, pricing, underwriting, forms, telematics, and state management operations. Much of this work involves novel questions in a fast-evolving regulatory landscape, and you'll be expected to bring original thinking rather than precedent alone.

 

Represent the company in complex matters. You'll advise on substantial legal and business transactions requiring insurance product and regulatory expertise, including matters involving adverse parties and partners. You'll conduct deep research in your areas of specialization and direct and refine the work of others.

 

Lead and grow the team. You'll manage goals, capacity, performance, and development for your direct reports, building the team's depth in a highly specialized practice and coordinating closely with other Legal managers.

 

Improve how the team works. You'll strengthen knowledge sharing, documentation, and the team's use of tools and technology so legal support scales with the business.

Qualifications

What you'll bring

 

Required

• J.D. or L.L.B. and admission to the bar of at least one U.S. jurisdiction
• 18+ years practicing as an attorney
• Expert knowledge of insurance regulatory law
• Excellent analytical, legal writing, and communication skills
• Proven ability to work effectively with business partners, outside counsel, and adverse parties
• Commitment to the highest standards of legal and business ethics and professional responsibility

 

Preferred

• People management experience
• CPCU designation
• Personal lines auto, telematics, or state regulatory experience

The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.
