Overview
Job Summary
Provides service throughout the Meat and Production Department and prepares retail and production areas for sales. Weighs, trays, grinds, wraps and prices meat and poultry; prepares, stocks and displays products in Deli, Seafood and cut fruit areas; receives and stocks inventory; ensures product quality, freshness, selection and proper labeling; and maintains clean, sanitary work areas and equipment. Consistently provides friendly, courteous customer service to internal and external customers.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Welcomes, engages, serves and thanks customers while maintaining an atmosphere of friendly, enthusiastic, fast and courteous service.
- Weighs, trays, grinds, wraps and prices poultry and meat and operates wrapping, weighing and related Meat Department equipment.
- Prepares production items according to recipes and food-safety procedures; operates Deli, Seafood and Cut Fruit production area equipment.
- Prepares, stocks, displays, straightens and rotates Meat and fresh production products; maintains attractive retail cases and appropriate inventory levels; and handles frozen and refrigerated product safely.
- Inspects products for quality and freshness and prevents the sale of spoiled or outdated merchandise by following applicable laws and company requirements for weighing, labeling, code dating, rework and reduced-to-clear items.
- Maintains required product signage, including price, description, code date and Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) information.
- Receives inventory, verifies ordered product, reports discrepancies and stocks merchandise in designated areas.
- Maintains cases by using fresh pans, rotating and replenishing product, consolidating racks and cleaning mirrors and glass displays.
- Cleans and sanitizes work areas, cutting and production rooms, tables, wrapping stations, retail cases, coolers and equipment; breaks down and reassembles equipment; washes dishes; removes trash and paper; and uses approved sanitizing solutions.
- Follows all food-safety and sanitation procedures and completes required production, temperature and sanitation records.
- Assists Meat Cutters and department management with related tasks and may participate in a Meat Cutter training program to learn basic cutting skills.
- Performs other duties as assigned or needed.
Requirements
Ability to:
- Work varied shifts in a 24/7 operation, including nights, weekends and holidays.
- Communicate effectively with customers and employees; receive orders; answer questions; and maintain friendly, courteous and tactful interactions while remaining composed.
- Conduct visual inspections and read and follow written assignments, production guides, recipes and product labels; accurately record production quantities and temperature readings.
- Perform basic math, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and compute weights and measures.
- Handle food products and use cleaning chemicals in accordance with applicable laws, manufacturer instructions and company standards.
- Learn product variability and perishability, safe handling and preparation, sanitation procedures and department policies.
- Complete required training and meet established productivity and accuracy standards.
- Operate related equipment safely and quickly with manual dexterity and effective hand-eye coordination while remaining alert to hazards involving procedures, knives, machinery and other work aids.
- Reach, lift and maneuver objects of varying dimensions and weights up to approximately 25 pounds frequently and up to 60 pounds occasionally.
- Push and pull loaded hand trucks, pallet jacks and product racks.
- Perform repetitive arm movements required to wrap, slice and process products.
- Stand, walk and move rapidly for extended periods and bend, stoop, twist, turn and reach over counters or into tight areas frequently.
- Work with hands exposed to moisture while handling poultry, meat and related food products.
- Work for prolonged periods in refrigerated areas from approximately 32 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit and handle refrigerated goods at temperatures from approximately -20 to 28 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Wear hairnets, beard nets, gloves and other personal protective equipment as required.
- Perform primary duties efficiently and accurately.
Additional Requirements:
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Food Handler certification, as required by state law.
Machines and Equipment Operated:
- Film overwrappers, wrapping machines, digital scales and related labeling equipment.
- Knives, kitchen utensils, electric slicers, grinders, cubers and other authorized Meat and production processing equipment.
- Trash compactors, cardboard balers, pallet jacks, hand trucks and product racks.
