What you'll do...
Role summary:The Principal, Software Engineer leads the design and delivery of scalable platform capabilities, including cloud-native architectures and AI/ML frameworks, to support Walmart’s evolving technology landscape. You will be a driving force in the adoption of AI-assisted and agentic engineering practices, leveraging AI coding agents to accelerate development velocity, improve code quality, and unlock new capabilities for the team. You are as comfortable designing resilient backend services in Java and Spring Boot as you are crafting smooth, responsive associate-facing experiences in React Native. You will set technical direction, mentor engineers, and partner with product, design teams to deliver outcomes at scale.

The Associate and Agentic Experiences team within People Tech & Services delivers exceptional digital solutions for a global Walmart associate community. Positioned at the intersection of technology and human impact, the team develops systems supporting compensation and benefits management. Leading a modernization initiative, it simplifies complex user journeys and unifies global solutions into a seamless digital platform. AI integration enhances how associates engage with pay and benefits. The team prioritizes scalable development, user-centric design, and impactful work that improves everyday experiences worldwide, fostering collaboration and innovation across technical and business domains.
What you'll do:
Technical Leadership
- Define and drive the technical vision and architecture for systems across the Associate and Agentic experiences domain
- Lead design reviews, architecture decisions, and cross-team technical alignment
- Design, build, and maintain high-performance backend services and APIs
- Build and optimize mobile-first associate experiences using React Native
- Own end-to-end delivery of complex features, from API to UI components to observability
- Build AI agents that automate, augment, orchestrate engineering and product workflows
- Champion the use of AI coding agents to improve throughput and quality
- Mentor and grow senior and staff engineers
- Participate in and lead incident reviews, postmortems, and reliability improvements
What you'll bring:
- Extensive experience in cloud-native architecture principles.
- Proven ability to design and deliver scalable, fault-tolerant distributed systems and reusable tooling.
- Strong proficiency in AI/ML integration and building intelligent software systems using languages such as Python, Java.
- Demonstrated experience designing and building AI agents — including at least one production deployment
- Experience using AI agents to write, generate, or review code (agentic coding workflows)
- Expertise in driving full software development lifecycle including CI/CD, testing, and incident response.
- Demonstrated skills in technical solution design, requirements analysis, and problem solving.
- Effective collaboration and mentorship capabilities to guide engineering teams.
- Commitment to continuous improvement and innovation in engineering processes and products.

The annual salary range for this position is $110,000.00 - $220,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :
