About This Opportunity

H2O.ai is seeking a high-impact Manager of Software Development to lead and scale our engineering efforts. In this role, you will balance technical leadership with people management, guiding a talented team of engineers to build scalable, data-intensive applications. You will be instrumental in defining the technical roadmap, mentoring engineers, and ensuring the delivery of robust, production-grade AI solutions that empower our global customers.

This position is based in Sri Lanka. 

What You Will Do

• Set direction: Define the automation roadmap in collaboration with engineering leadership; prioritize work across competing demands and communicate trade-offs clearly to stakeholders.
• Lead & grow: Hire, onboard, and develop a high-performing team across multiple streams; run 1:1s, performance reviews, and career growth conversations.
• Build & ship: Contribute to the design, development, and deployment of scalable applications using Kubernetes, Go, Python, Protobuf, gRPC, and REST API.
• Work with real-world big data: Optimize and process large datasets efficiently.
• Get hands-on with streaming data: Work with Kafka and real-time data processing.
• Deploy like a pro: Use Helm to deploy and manage Kubernetes applications.
• Work like a pro: Debug, test, and refine software to ensure high code quality and reliability.
• Partner cross-functionally: Collaborate with product, QA, platform, and data engineering teams; represent the team in planning and architecture discussions.
• Learn & grow: Work closely with seasoned Engineers and leadership who will mentor and support you.

What We Are Looking For

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
• 10+ years of software development experience, with 2–3 years in an engineering leadership or management role.
• Proven experience leading small-to-medium teams across multiple streams, including hiring, mentoring, and retaining strong engineers.
• Proficiency in Java, Go, Python, Kubernetes, Protobuf, gRPC, REST API, and micro-services architecture.
• Passion for data-heavy applications and handling large datasets.
• Familiarity with microservices architecture and distributed systems.
• Ability to balance strategic roadmap thinking with day-to-day execution and team health.
• Bonus points if you've worked with Kafka or Helm (but if not, we'll help you learn!).
• Knowledge of JVM-based languages is advantageous but optional.
• A growth mindset – we don't expect you to know everything, but we expect you to be excited to learn.
