Senior Virtualization & Backup System Engineer (Freelance possible)

📋 Tasks and responsibilities

As a senior system engineer focused on virtualization, storage and backup, you will manage, optimize and evolve infrastructure platforms that support business-critical digital services. You will help ensure performance, availability and continuity across data center systems and hosted applications.

• Provide level 2 and level 3 support for virtualization and backup platforms.
  • Design, manage and maintain Nutanix (AHV) and VMware environments.
  • Implement and maintain clustering and high-availability solutions.
  • Document operational procedures for 1st and 2nd line support.
• Design, implement and operate enterprise backup solutions for virtual servers.
  • Define and enforce backup SLAs, RPO and RTO.
  • Configure backup policies, retention, restore processes and reporting.
  • Manage archiving and long-term retention for virtual workloads.
• Automate provisioning and recurring operational activities related to virtualization and backup.
  • Automate virtual server deployments.
  • Create and maintain scripts for backup, restore, monitoring and maintenance tasks.
• Maintain high-availability platforms and backup processes.
  • Monitor and optimize performance, capacity and storage consumption proactively.
• Contribute to disaster recovery planning and testing.
  • Define and validate restore and disaster recovery scenarios.
  • Participate in DR tests and continuously improve recovery procedures.
• Follow up incidents and communicate clearly when service levels are at risk or breached.
• Keep your technical expertise up to date and share knowledge with colleagues.
• Support continuity and security initiatives in collaboration with infrastructure specialists and other teams.
• Participate in internal team meetings and ensure efficient handover of information and work.

📝Your profile

• At least 7 years of experience as a Virtualization System Engineer, including 2 years in a senior role with end responsibility for technical matters.
• Relevant experience at senior IT System Engineer level is required.
• Fluent in Dutch or French, with passive knowledge of the other national language, and a good command of English.
• Strong expertise in virtualization platforms, ideally Nutanix AHV and VMware vSphere.
• Strong knowledge of backup and data protection solutions, including SLA management and archiving.
• Good knowledge of SAN and storage technologies.
• Solid understanding of Windows Server environments in virtualized infrastructures.
• Good understanding of networking fundamentals such as TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP and SMTP.
• Good knowledge of server hardware and virtual infrastructure components.
• Experience with monitoring and reporting tools in enterprise environments.
• Hands-on experience with automation, backup & storage, hyperconverged infrastructure and virtualization.
• Analytical mindset and openness to new solutions and technologies.
• Able to prioritize multiple requests by balancing urgency, impact and customer interest.
• Team player who shares knowledge and best practices easily.

Location

The office is located in central Brussels, close to metro and train connections. A hybrid setup applies, with a minimum of 2 days per week on site.
