Key Responsibilities
This apprenticeship is a great opportunity to build a career in materials testing and construction, developing practical skills while gaining experience across both laboratory and site environments. No previous industry experience is expected - you’ll learn the technical skills and testing methods you need as you progress.
As part of your role, you’ll:
- Get hands-on with materials testing - helping to prepare and test samples in the laboratory and on construction sites, following recognised testing methods.
- Learn how specialist testing equipment is used - carrying out basic equipment checks and learning how to make sure equipment is ready and suitable for testing.
- Prepare and manage samples – helping to receive, label, store and prepare different materials ready for testing.
- Record and understand test results - completing worksheets and electronic records accurately and learning why good record keeping is so important.
- Build your knowledge of quality and compliance - learning how testing procedures and quality standards help ensure results are accurate and reliable.
- Experience both lab and site-based work - giving you exposure to different working environments and the opportunity to develop a broad range of practical skills.
- Learn from experienced technicians - working as part of the team and gradually building the confidence and technical knowledge to carry out more testing independently.
About You
You’re practical, reliable, and detail-focused. You take pride in following procedures accurately, whether that’s measuring materials, carrying out tests, or recording results. You understand that quality and safety matter, especially in a busy site environment, and you’re comfortable working to clear standards and deadlines without cutting corners.
You learn best by doing and enjoy hands-on work using equipment and tools. You’re confident with basic maths and recording data, and you stay calm and focused even when working around machinery or in fast-paced environments. You’re happy working independently once trained, but also communicate clearly with site teams to ensure work is completed safely and correctly.
You’re motivated by being part of something tangible - contributing to projects like roads, buildings, and infrastructure - and you’re keen to build a long-term career in the construction or materials testing industry.
To apply for this apprenticeship, you must:
✔️ Be 18 or over
✔️ Not be in full-time education
✔️ Have lived in the UK for at least 3 years
✔️ Have the right to work in the UK
If you’re unsure whether you meet the criteria, we’d still love to hear from you - get in touch and we can advise you further.
