Description
Environmental Planner
Maul Foster & Alongi, Inc. (MFA) is seeking a full-time Environmental Planner. This is a hybrid position that could be based out of any of our offices. As our Environmental Planner, you will manage diverse projects, primarily in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, collaborating with clients and stakeholders. This position will be involved in all aspects of project execution, from analysis, report and proposal writing to comprehensive project management. You will lead permitting strategies, coordinate with regulatory agencies, prepare permit applications, and guide projects through local, state, and federal approval processes. This position offers the opportunity to work directly with clients, collaborate across disciplines, and help shape infrastructure, redevelopment, restoration, and waterfront projects throughout the Pacific Northwest.
As an Environmental Planner, you will...
work on a wide variety of projects that help clients advance site development, restoration, and infrastructure projects across the Pacific Northwest. One day might involve mapping out a permitting strategy for a complex waterfront project, while the next could include coordinating with regulatory agencies, preparing permit applications, or helping a client navigate local land use requirements. A significant portion of your work will focus on environmental permitting, regulatory coordination, and finding practical pathways to move projects forward.
In this role, you'll serve as a trusted advisor to clients, helping them understand regulatory requirements and guiding projects through environmental review and permitting processes. You'll manage project schedules, budgets, and client communications while collaborating closely with planners, scientists, engineers, GIS specialists, and communications professionals to deliver successful outcomes.
As you grow in the role, you'll have opportunities to build client relationships, contribute to business development efforts, support proposal preparation, attend conferences and industry events, and mentor junior staff. If you enjoy solving complex permitting challenges, working with a wide range of stakeholders, and helping bring impactful projects to life throughout the Pacific Northwest, you'll fit right in at MFA.
To thrive in this role, you must have...
- Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- 5+ years of professional experience in environmental planning, permitting, or land use planning.
- Demonstrated experience preparing and managing permit applications for projects within the Pacific Northwest.
- Working knowledge of Clean Water Act permitting, SEPA, shoreline regulations, critical areas ordinances, removal-fill law, and local land use approval processes.
- Experience coordinating directly with regulatory agencies, municipalities, tribes, and other stakeholders.
- Proven ability to manage and execute multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining strong client relationships.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a strong ability to prepare and present technical reports.
- Growing knowledge of land use planning principles, environmental regulations, and community development strategies.
- Proficiency with MS Office Suite; GIS or similar tools a plus.
