As part of the university, the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center is a federally funded center that operates exemplary elementary and secondary education programs for deaf and hard of hearing students as well as national outreach programs which develop and disseminate innovative curricula, instructional techniques, and products nationwide, and provide information, training, and technical assistance to parents and professionals serving children from birth through age 21.

Summary:

Supporting Clerc Center for a fixed-term basis.

 

Job Description:

Primary Responsibilities:

To provide and work with teachers to ensure the safety and well-being of the students working one-on-one while helping those master skills and improve academic performance in K-12 school settings. Familiarity and be able to react quickly and appropriately in crisis situations, vigilant in monitoring students and be agile, work with students with various instructional activities, classroom and student management.

 
Qualifications:

• High School diploma or GED required

• Two years of post-secondary education in education, deaf education, or a related field.

• Must have at least one year of experience working with children in K-12 educational setting.

• Knowledge and understanding of K-12 students and behaviors of students at different age groups

• Fluency in American Sign Language

Employment Information:

• Employment Dates: ASAP – June 11, 2027

• The contractual period is divided into two portions: August 13, 2026 - December 18, 2026 and January 4, 2027  – June 11, 2027, and is dependent upon performance and program needs. 

• Required Orientation Training:  to be determined

• All employees hired must undergo and pay for a background investigation if selected for the job and must be cleared before starting first day on the job.  Fees for the background investigation can range from $35.50 to $135 dependent on your location(s).

• Background Check and Gallaudet Student Conduct Office Records must be in good standing.

• Compensation:  $18.40 per hour

• Work Days: All student days, except for holiday breaks, spring break, and professional days. If there is a professional day requiring temporary employees to attend, employees will be notified.

• Work Hours:  Mondays - Fridays 7:30am – 4:00pm, including a 30-minute unpaid break.
