Meter Reader/Installer

The Meter Reader/Installer is responsible for accurately reading, inspecting, installing, exchanging and maintaining electric metering equipment for residential, commercial, and light industrial customers, of single-phase class 100 and class 200 meters only. This position supports billing accuracy, customer satisfaction, operational efficiency, and revenue protection through safe work practices, field investigations, data collection, and customer interactions. The employee utilizes handheld technology, AMI/AMR systems, GIS mapping, and utility software to document meter data and ensure compliance with District policies and regulatory requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned. 

• Serve as a positive representative of the District while interacting with customers.
• Respond professionally to customer inquiries regarding billing, meter readings, and service concerns.
• Educate customers regarding meter access requirements and safety concerns.
• Coordinate with Customer Service, Engineering, Operations, and Billing departments to resolve customer issues.
• Read electric meters utilizing handheld devices and mobile applications.
• Verify meter accuracy and identify abnormal consumption patterns.
• Perform meter exchanges, installations, removals, and reconnects within authorized scope of work.
• Investigate and document meter tampering, unauthorized connections, theft of service, and damaged equipment.
• Conduct field inspections of metering equipment for safety, accessibility, and compliance.
• Maintain accurate route records and update customer account information in utility systems.
• Verify service addresses, meter numbers, GPS coordinates, and asset data.
• Assist with AMI/AMR meter deployments, upgrades, and troubleshooting.
• Follow all District safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
• Conduct daily vehicle, equipment, and PPE inspections.
• Identify and report hazardous conditions, unsafe installations, and field safety issues.
• Maintain compliance with applicable OSHA, WAC, and District safety standards.
• Must be able to work independently, be self-motivated, and exercise sound judgement.
• May require work hours in excess of 40 hours per week, 8 hours per day, 5 days per week.  
• All other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:  
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum 1-3 years of utility, field service, meter reading, or electrical experience.

• Able to safely use Volt/Multi-meter and protect handheld data capture device.
• Able to effectively operate radio meter reading equipment
• Occasional use of standard handheld tools including hammers, pliers, and screwdrivers.

Certificates, Licenses, or Registrations:

• Must have a valid Driver’s License.
• Must have, or the ability to obtain a First Aid Card with CPR. 
• Must qualify for the District’s auto liability insurance.

Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be proficient in MS Outlook, Excel, Word and have basic computer skills.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently required to walk, maintain balance, climb inclines/stairs/ladders, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, push, pull, twist, uses hands to finger, grip, handle, or feel, and sit or stand for extended periods of time. Required to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Must have correctable, color vision, and correctable hearing. Required to speak and hear clearly when communicating over the telephone and in person. Wears personal protective equipment as required. 

Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to indoor and outdoor environments. Outdoor settings include all types of property and site conditions including open spaces, timberlands, urban developments, flat and hilly terrain, building construction sites, and road rights-of-way. Indoor settings include commercial and industrial sites that can involve cramped spaces, moving machinery, etc. Individuals may be exposed to hazardous conditions, including but not limited to obstacles, heights, open trenches, highway traffic, electric lines, all types of vegetation, fiberglass insulation, paint fumes, wood preservatives, solvents, oils, and cleaning compounds. Must be able to safely drive district vehicles in changing weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment may range up to 85 decibels.
