UW Performance Nutrition has an outstanding opportunity for a Temporary Nutrition Trainer to join their team.
About this Opportunity
Reporting to the Director of Performance Nutrition, the Performance Dietitian is responsible for managing and delivering comprehensive nutritional services to approximately 650 student-athletes on 22 varsity athletic teams in collaboration with athletic trainers, team physicians, sports psychologists, and strength and conditioning coaches, and in support of coaches, athletics administrators and department personnel.
As a trusted partner within UW Athletics, the Performance Dietitian works closely with student-athletes, coaches, sports medicine providers, and performance staff to ensure nutrition is effectively integrated into training, competition, recovery, and long-term health goals. This position plays an essential role in fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and student-athlete-centered care across the Husky Athletics community. Key Responsibilities
Provide nutrition services for assigned Olympic sport programs (60%):
- Develop and implement team nutrition strategies while managing a substantial caseload of student-athletes requiring performance and medical nutrition support.
- Conduct nutrition assessments and screenings, develop individualized nutrition care plans, and provide medical nutrition therapy for a broad range of conditions.
- Review and provide guidance on dietary supplement use in accordance with NCAA, anti-doping, and University guidelines.
Provide nutrition education and outreach (5%):
- Educate student-athletes, coaches, and support staff on evidence-based nutrition practices, including meal planning, grocery shopping, food storage, competition fueling, recovery nutrition, cooking skills, and other lifestyle nutrition topics that support health and athletic performance.
Conduct body composition assessment and education (5%):
- Evaluate body composition and provide education to student-athletes and coaches regarding the relationship between body composition, health, and athletic performance throughout the training and competitive year.
Lead sport science and nutrition data initiatives (5%):
- Coordinate hydration, sweat rate, body composition, and other nutrition-related performance assessments for assigned teams.
- Utilize technology platforms and applications to support student-athlete education, monitor progress, and generate reports with data-informed recommendations for coaches and sport performance staff.
Collaborate as part of a multidisciplinary sports medicine team (5%):
- Work closely with mental health providers, team physicians, athletic trainers, and other healthcare professionals to support student-athletes with eating disorders, disordered eating, body image concerns, and other nutrition-related medical conditions.
Provide dietary supplements, education and guidance (5%):
- Educate student-athletes, coaches, and support staff on the safe and effective use of dietary supplements, including considerations related to efficacy, safety, drug-nutrient interactions, NCAA regulations, and anti-doping requirements.
Support medical nutrition supplementation recommendations (5%):
- Collaborate with team physicians to evaluate and recommend vitamins, minerals, and dietary supplements for student-athletes with medically indicated needs.
Provide on-site nutrition coaching during training table meals (5%):
- Attend team meals and training table services to offer individualized nutrition guidance and reinforce healthy fueling practices.
Serve as a nutrition resource for meal and menu planning (2.5%):
- Advise athletic teams on year-round menu development, training table offerings, pre- and post-competition meals, and food service planning with hotels, caterers, and restaurants for home and away events.
Support staff development and training (2.5%):
- Assist the Director of Performance Nutrition in mentoring and supervising performance nutrition fellows, dietetic interns, and student interns.
Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in food and nutrition sciences, Dietetics, or a related field with at least one year of experience providing nutrition counseling, with a focus on sports nutrition.
- Must be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
- Certification as a Dietitian by the Washington State Department of Health is required upon hire.
Additional Qualifications
- Experience conducting body composition assessments (e.g., DXA and ISAK skinfold measurements), sweat testing, hydration assessment, and related performance nutrition evaluations are desired.
- Have knowledge of complementary medicine, ergogenic aids, and nutritional supplements, including NCAA and WADA guidelines.
- Skilled in nutrient analysis and meal planning, maintain a valid Washington State Food Worker Card, and demonstrate safe food handling and food service practices.
- Ability to recognize signs and symptoms of eating disorders and disordered eating and collaborate with the medical team to support appropriate care for student-athletes.
- A strong understanding of medical nutrition therapy and experience developing and implementing therapeutic nutrition plans.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience as a Sports Dietitian supporting NCAA Division I student-athletes.
- Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) credential, or willingness to obtain certification within one year of hire.
- Master’s degree in food science, Nutrition, Exercise Physiology, or a related field.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to work independently while exercising sound judgment and initiative.
- Strong time management, organizational, and record-keeping skills, with attention to detail.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Effective presentation, education, and nutrition counseling skills.
- Proven ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with student-athletes, coaches, medical professionals, and other stakeholders.
Working Conditions
- Maintain a regular work schedule with consistent weekly hours.
- Occasional evening and weekend work, attendance at athletic events, and team travel may be required to support program needs.
- Work is conducted in office, clinical, athletic, and food service environments.
- Frequent interaction with student-athletes, coaches, and multidisciplinary healthcare professionals.
- Regular use of computers and nutrition assessment equipment is expected.
- Must be able to move throughout athletic facilities and occasionally lift to 25 pounds.
- This position requires compliance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), and knowledge of rules and regulations of athletic governing bodies: e.g., National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), regarding banned drugs and restricted substances.
- Compliance with the rules and regulations of the University, the NCAA, the Conference, the State of Washington and any other governing body is of paramount importance to the University. The overall responsibility of this position is for the successful operation of the program in full compliance with all such rules and regulations. As a condition of employment, the Employee shall be required to participate in rules education programs offered by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
