The Environmental Program Specialist will provide comprehensive environmental compliance support across all GE Vernova Advanced Research Center (ARC) locations, including our operations in Niskayuna, New York, and Longueuil, Quebec. This role is critical for ensuring our research operations adhere to federal, provincial, state, and local regulations regarding air,
water, and waste management. You will serve as the subject matter expert for environmental stewardship, maintaining operational permits (including NYS air permits), managing hazardous waste lifecycles, and driving sustainability initiatives. As a key member of the EHS team, you will bridge the gap between regulatory requirements and laboratory operations, fostering a culture of
environmental excellence.

Job Description

Compliance Management

•  Ensure facility-wide compliance with environmental

regulations across all sites, including the management of the New York State air permit for the Malta facility and oversight of waste management programs in Longueuil and other research sites.

•  Waste Lifecycle Oversight: Oversee hazardous waste management from generation to disposal. Ensure all waste manifests and documentation are accurate and maintained in accordance with jurisdictional regulatory requirements and internal GE Vernova standards within Benchmark Gensuite.

•  Emergency Preparedness: Maintain, update, and test facility emergency contingency plans, ensuring staff are prepared to respond to environmental incidents in compliance with local and national safety standards.

•  Audits & Surveys: Conduct regular environmental compliance audits and surveys of research laboratories to identify risks, ensure proper chemical storage/labeling, and verify adherence to waste management protocols.

•  Program Strategy & Training: Develop and implement environmental training

programs and communication strategies to ensure team members understand

compliance requirements, waste minimization techniques, and their roles in

environmental stewardship.

•  Corporate Support: Serve as a primary point of contact for GE Vernova corporate EHS and environmental program inquiries, providing reports, data, and subject matter expertise as required.

•  Sustainability Leadership: Support Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reporting and broader sustainability initiatives, helping to track and reduce the environmental footprint of our research operations.

 

Qualifications/Requirements

•  Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related technical discipline from an accredited university or college.

•  Experience: Professional experience in environmental compliance, specifically managing hazardous waste programs and environmental permits in an industrial or laboratory setting.

•  Regulatory Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of relevant environmental

regulations (e.g., RCRA, CWA, CAA in the U.S. and equivalent provincial/federal

environmental frameworks in Quebec/Canada).

•  Data Management: Proficiency in using EHS management software, specifically Benchmark Gensuite, to track documentation, compliance, and reporting metrics.

•  Analytical Ability: Ability to interpret complex regulatory requirements across multiple jurisdictions and translate them into clear, actionable operational procedures for research teams.

 

Desired Characteristics

•  Professional Credentials: Highly desirable for candidates to hold industry-recognized certifications, such as Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Registered Environmental Manager (REM), or equivalent environmental professional credentials.

•  Collaborative Leadership: Demonstrated ability to work across functional teams—including scientists, engineers, and facilities staff—to achieve environmental goals.

•  Problem-Solving: Ability to resolve complex environmental compliance issues within a fast-paced, evolving R&D environment.

•  Communication: Highly effective at communicating technical environmental risks and requirements to a non-technical audience and influencing positive behavioral changes.

•  Project Management: Proven ability to organize competing priorities and manage multiple site-wide environmental projects simultaneously.

•  Attention to Detail: Meticulous approach to documentation, record-keeping, and the maintenance of permit-related files

For candidates applying to a U.S. based position, the pay range for this position is between $113,100.00 and $188,500.00. The Company pays a geographic differential of 110%, 120% or 130% of salary in certain areas. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set.

 

 

Bonus eligibility: discretionary annual bonus.
