Take Your Cultural Resources Career to the Next Level
Kleinfelder, a Forbes' Top Employer for Engineers in North America, is committed to a people-first culture, technical excellence, and creating opportunities where employees can thrive!
Cultural Resources professionals work on exciting projects involving the identification, preservation, and management of historic, archaeological, and culturally significant sites and resources. They help to ensure that roads, bridges, pipelines, buildings, and other development projects do not accidentally damage important historical sites, archaeological artifacts, cemeteries, or places that have cultural significance to communities and tribes.
Step into Your New Role
Are you passionate about archaeology, adventure, and working in the outdoors? As an Archaeologist I (Flex-Time), you'll be part of a professional field survey team conducting cultural resource investigations across the western United States. This role is ideal for early-career archaeologists seeking hands-on experience while contributing to meaningful projects that preserve and protect our shared cultural heritage.
Working alongside experienced archaeologists and field leaders, you'll travel to remote and scenic locations, conduct archaeological surveys, record cultural resources, and help ensure compliance with federal, state, and Tribal regulations. Every project offers an opportunity to expand your field skills, gain exposure to diverse landscapes and archaeological traditions, and make a lasting impact on resource stewardship.
This flexible opportunity offers the chance to gain valuable field experience, work alongside respected archaeologists, and explore some of the most remarkable landscapes in the western United States. Whether you're beginning your archaeology career or seeking seasonal field opportunities, you'll be part of a team dedicated to preserving cultural resources while supporting impactful projects across the region.
If you enjoy working outdoors, discovering the stories of the past, and contributing to projects that matter, we'd love to hear from you.
Job Responsibilities:
- Conduct pedestrian archaeological surveys in remote locations throughout the western U.S.
- Identify, document, and record archaeological sites, historic properties, and isolated finds.
- Utilize GPS, digital field applications, maps, and other field technologies.

- Hike long distances over varied terrain and work in diverse weather conditions.
- Support a strong culture of safety, teamwork, and scientific integrity.
- Travel frequently and work on projects ranging from several days to several weeks in duration.
Position Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field, or currently completing degree requirements.
- Completion of an accredited archaeological field school preferred.
- Strong interest in Cultural Resource Management (CRM) and archaeological fieldwork.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a field team in remote environments.
- Willingness to travel extensively and perform physically demanding outdoor work.
- Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and eagerness to learn from experienced professionals.
Preferred Skills/Experience
- Six months to two years of CRM field experience.
- Survey experience across multiple western states.
- Proficiency with ArcGIS platforms and GPS data collection.
- Experience recording archaeological sites independently.
- Current First Aid/CPR certification.
- Experience camping or working on extended remote field assignments.
- Master's coursework in Archaeology or Anthropology (not required).
Ideal Candidate Profile: An entry-level archaeologist who enjoys working outdoors, is comfortable hiking 8-12 miles per day in rugged terrain, can adapt to remote project environments, and is eager to build a long-term career in cultural resource management and archaeological consulting.
