Description

The Biomedical Engineering (BME) Department at The University of Akron invites applications for a nine-month, tenure-track faculty position at Assistant or Associate Professor levels with an anticipated start date of August 2027. Preference will be given to candidates with research interests in macroscale biomechanics, gait analysis, and prosthetic devices. While the primary interest is experimental biomechanics, exceptional candidates with computational biomechanics expertise will also be considered. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to our core mission in teaching and research, develop an independent, extramurally funded research program, have a passionate interest in teaching and mentorship for undergraduate and graduate students, and actively participate in the departmental activities. Candidates should have a doctoral degree in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related discipline with a biomedical engineering emphasis. Post-doctoral training for candidates at the Assistant Professor level is preferable but not required. Applicants at the Associate Professor level are expected to have an active, nationally or internationally recognized research program.

The BME Department has over 160 undergraduate students and offers ABET-accredited B.S. degrees, M.S. degrees in BME, and a Ph.D. degree through the College. Our department emphasizes experiential learning where a majority of the undergraduate students participate in our top-notch co-operative education program, perform undergraduate research, and are also active in regional and national conferences. The BME department offers interdisciplinary research programs with active collaborations within the university, with other institutions, such as the Cleveland Clinic and Northeast Ohio Medical University, and with local industries. Our research has been supported by funding from the NSF, NIH, DoW, AHA, VA, foundations, and industry. For further information please see https://www.uakron.edu/engineering/BME.
