Performs highly responsible, skilled, and lead-level work in the supervision, safety, operation, and maintenance of a municipal aquatic facility. Position ensures the efficient and safe operation of the facility for the convenience, enjoyment, and protection of patrons while exercising functional supervision over part-time and full-time lifeguard staff.

Work includes a combination of direct lifeguarding (approximately 60%) and senior-level responsibilities (approximately 40%), including staff supervision, program support, facility maintenance oversight, vendor coordination, and administrative functions. Employee is accountable for maintaining the facility's operational readiness, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and supporting the delivery of aquatic programs and services.

  • Maintains constant surveillance of aquatic areas and enforces safety rules and procedures to ensure patron safety.
  • Responds to emergencies, performs water rescues, and administers first aid, CPR, and AED as needed.
  • Provides supervision, leadership, and direction to lifeguard staff and serves as lead staff in the absence of a supervisor.
  • Assists with staff scheduling and coverage to support facility operations and aquatic programming.
  • Trains, mentors, and evaluates staff; conducts in-service training and addresses performance or disciplinary issues as needed.
  • Supports and coordinates aquatic programs, lessons, teams, special events, and other facility activities.
  • Ensures the cleanliness, safety, security, and operational readiness of the aquatic facility, equipment, and pool systems.
  • Identifies maintenance needs and initiates, documents, tracks, and follows up on repairs and equipment replacements.
  • Maintains required health department, safety, incident, maintenance, inventory, and operational records and reports.
  • Orders and monitors facility supplies, chemicals, equipment, and inventory to support safe and efficient operations.
  • Serves as a primary contact for patrons and families, addresses concerns professionally, and communicates emergencies or facility closures to the Aquatics Supervisor.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Experience

  • Minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible lifeguarding experience 
  • Experience in aquatic operations, maintenance, or pool chemistry required
  • Previous lead or supervisory experience preferred 
  • A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid Florida driver’s license
  • Nationally recognized lifeguard certification from the American Red Cross or other acceptable agency
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer
  • First Aid and Safety certification from the American Red Cross or other acceptable agency
  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification
  • Must have American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification within six (6) months of hire.
  • Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or equivalent certification from the American Red Cross. 
  • Must obtain Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatics Facility Operator (AFO) certification within one year of hire
  • Must obtain Bloodborne Pathogens and Oxygen Administration certification within one year of hire
  • EMT certification preferred (7% salary increase upon State of Florida EMT certification)
  • Must pass required swim test (annually), physical, and drug screening

Key Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of lifeguarding, emergency response, water safety, aquatic operations, and pool maintenance.
  • Ability to lead and hold staff accountable for performance, safety, and operational standards.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, including responding effectively in high-pressure situations.
  • Effective communication, customer service, and relationship-building skills with staff, the public, vendors, and diverse communities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, tablets, and related applications.
  • Demonstrates professionalism, integrity, ethical conduct, and reliability.
  • Ability to pass an FDLE Level II criminal Background Check and fingerprinting

Physical Requirements

  • Range of work from sedentary to extreme labor-intensive activity, depending on rescue situations
  • Physical abilities include running, walking, pulling, pushing, climbing, carrying, and lifting
  • Specific sensory abilities include hearing, talking, and seeing
  • Work performed outdoors under all weather conditions

Work Days/Hours : Hours will vary between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., 40 hours a week, including weekends/holidays
