Software Engineer

Department: Information Technology

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: Remote- USA

Description

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Software Engineer is a key member of the Technology team, responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the software, integrations, and AI-powered workflows that support firm operations. This role demands strong software engineering fundamentals, the ability to work across the full stack, and a practical understanding of how to build and integrate applications within a SaaS-driven business environment.

The ideal candidate is not defined by a single language or framework. You understand software architecture deeply enough to pick up new tools as the work requires, and you have a track record of delivering full-stack applications that integrate with platform ecosystems. You will own projects end-to-end, from requirements through deployment and maintenance, and contribute to the team’s growing portfolio of internal applications, automation pipelines, and AI-powered tools.

You will work closely with the Lead Engineer and Director of Technology on a daily basis. The team is small, the problems are real, and your work will be visible across the organization.

Who You Are and What You Will Do

You are a builder who thinks in systems, not syntax and you'd rather be handed a hard problem and the room to solve it than a checklist to follow. You have deep production experience in C# and .NET, and you understand software architecture well enough to make structural decisions and defend them under pressure. You have designed something from the ground up rather than only maintaining what someone else left behind, and you know the difference between a system that scales and one that merely works today.

You move fast and you like it that way. You're at your best with several things in motion at once, and a single project demanding narrow focus for weeks on end is the fastest way to lose you. Rules and process matter to you only to the extent they help you ship — you'll work around a rulebook that's slowing you down, and you don't need much oversight to know what to do next. You're direct and factual rather than diplomatic, more comfortable working through a hard technical problem solo than managing a room, and you'd rather earn trust with results than with small talk.

You have built the integrations that make platforms talk to each other, and you know that the friction vendor software leaves behind is where the expensive problems live. You have probably built internal tools at a company where technology was not the product, and you understand both the constraints and the leverage that come with that.

You take AI-assisted development seriously, treating it as infrastructure you have invested in and tuned rather than as a novelty. You ship quickly without shipping carelessly, and you are comfortable owning a project with minimal oversight.

What You'll Do

Platform and Application Engineering

  • Design and build applications in C# and .NET that surface operational data to attorneys and firm leadership
  • Architect and implement services using modern .NET patterns, treating separation of concerns, testability, and maintainability as first-class requirements
  • Model complex legal and operational domains into software that reflects how the business works

Integration Engineering

  • Design and build integrations across the firm's platform ecosystem, including CRM, telephony, document management, cloud services, and accounting systems
  • Develop and maintain REST APIs and middleware that keep data flowing reliably between connected systems
  • Build event-driven and asynchronous workflows where the problem calls for them

AI-Powered Tools

  • Build AI-powered tools for call analysis, document processing, and operational data extraction
  • Extend the team's AI development tooling, including agents, context engineering, and automation that compounds across the team
  • Contribute to the firm's growing portfolio of AI-assisted workflows

Cloud and Engineering Practice

  • Build and operate applications on Azure, covering provisioning, networking, identity, security, and cost management
  • Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, developer tooling, and engineering standards
  • Participate in the team's shared IT responsibilities, providing on-call support as needed

What You'll Bring

Required Experience

  • 7+ years of software development experience
  • Proficiency in C# and .NET (ASP.NET Core), with production systems you architected or substantially owned
  • Experience designing full-stack applications end to end, including a modern frontend such as Blazor or React
  • Strong relational database and SQL skills, such as SQL Server or PostgreSQL
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure, including deploying, operating, and securing real workloads
  • Experience building and consuming REST APIs and integrating third-party SaaS platforms
  • Proficiency with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and modern development workflows
  • Working fluency with AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or Cursor
  • Self-directed, able to own projects end to end with minimal oversight

What Makes You a Great Fit

  • Architectural depth in multi-tenant or white-label platform design
  • Experience with message-based or event-driven systems
  • Identity and access work with OpenID Connect, Microsoft Entra ID, or comparable identity providers
  • Production experience with AI and LLM APIs such as Anthropic, Azure OpenAI, or AWS Bedrock, especially Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, custom agents, or automation skills
  • Observability practice, including structured logging, distributed tracing, and OpenTelemetry
  • Familiarity with CRM platform APIs such as Salesforce, and with Microsoft Graph
  • Experience mentoring junior developers or leading small technical projects

Why Join Jimerson Birr?

Most law firms treat technology as a cost center. We don't. We're fast adopters of technology. Not for the sake of it, but with a specific purpose: to take the administrative, repeatable work off our attorneys' plates so they can spend their energy where it actually matters for clients. That philosophy runs all the way through the firm's long-term plan, and it puts Technology at the center of how we deliver for clients, not on the sidelines supporting it!

Because Technology is a small, hands-on team, you get the kind of ownership and visible impact that's hard to find at a larger company: you'll work directly with the Lead Engineer and Director of Technology, own projects end to end, and see your work show up in how attorneys and staff actually do their jobs; not buried three layers deep in a backlog.

AI-assisted development isn't a bonus skill here, it's treated as core infrastructure you're expected to build with and improve. If you want to work somewhere technologically advanced enough to back that claim up with real investment and real autonomy, this is that place!
