POSITION SUMMARY
The Projectionist operates and provides technical support to screenings and events in the Bright Family Screening Room (BFSR). This role reports to the Manager of Screening and Performance Facilities, who is part of the Media Technologies, and Production (MTP) team. Projectionist will collaborate with the Office of the Arts (OA) for calls which support public-facing events in the venue and also will support print traffic, quality control testing as well as booth and screening room upkeep as needed and when asked to by the Manager of Screening and Performance Facilities. 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

• Oversee screenings and events in the Bright Family Screening Room, working with Guest Experience/ Office of the Arts to ensure smooth and safe use of the facilities.

• Act as in-person point of contact for clients (internal and external to the Emerson Community) during event calls.

• Offer support to the Manager of Screening and Performance Facilities particularly by assisting in print traffic task management, quality control testing of content, ingestion to the server, and operating playback of DCPs and any other digital media requested by the client. Liaise Office of the Arts as needed.

• Work with stagehands to support screenings and event setup and breakdown.

• Ensure proper use of projection, sound, and AV equipment the BFSR; report any and all issues to the Manager of Screening and Performance Facilities. 

• Have healthy communication with and collaboration with other projectionists as well as student employees/stagehands.  

• Communicate and appropriately with Front of House and any other Office of the Arts employees, students, patrons, facilities employees, catering support as well as good communication with the Manager of Screening and Performance Facilities.

• Other duties as needed and/or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS – Qualifications are deemed required or preferred and represent what is needed to effectively perform this job. 

• Bachelor’s degree in Film, Media Arts, Performing Arts, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience required.

• 1-2 years of experience working professionally in performance spaces.

• Demonstrated knowledge of or interest in digital cinema projection systems or audio/visual work required.

• Must be comfortable working evenings and/or weekends for events and screenings.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES – Must have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities, or demonstrated interest in building the following:  

• Proficiency in operating digital projection systems, playback servers, and AV control platforms (e.g., Extron, Crestron, Q-SYS).

• Working knowledge of 35mm and 16mm projection formats; Massachusetts projectionist license preferred.

• Excellent scheduling, time management, and organizational skills.

• Strong interpersonal communication and customer service orientation.

• Ability to triage technical issues and escalate effectively to the Manager of Screening and Performance Facilities, and/or engineering teams or vendors.

• Ability to effectively communicate using ticketing tools (e.g., Zendesk) and inventory tracking systems, as needed.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES – Activities commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job. • Ability to lift and move up to 25 lbs. of AV or projection equipment.

• Capable of extended periods in low-light environments during screenings or performances.

• Frequent walking between rooms, up and down stairs, handling AV setups, and interacting with technical equipment.

• Ability to hear and set audio levels - as well as see picture on screen and identify any visual issues. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.

• Time is spent split between the screening room (lower level) and booth (upper level).

• Variable noise levels depending on the nature of screening/event.

• May be required to be in crowds, large and small, as well as in dark rooms, booth or screening room.

The hourly compensation range is $15.25 - $16.20.
