Description

Under direct supervision of the Animal Shelter Director, the Animal Shelter Assistant Directorassistsin department operations and supervision. The positionassistsin developing department policies and procedures, ensuring financial accountability for the department, and helps to plan and direct the work assignments for staff. The positionis responsible forproviding responsive, courteous, and efficient service to City staff and the public in all interactions. 



Essential Functions
  • Assists in the operation and maintenance of the Animal Shelter conformation to City, State, and Federal regulations and guidelines. 
    • Assists in establishing procedures for the day-to-day operation of the facility and develops and implements policies as directed by the Animal Shelter Director. 
  • Assists in the direction of adoption or disposal of stray or vicious animals. 
    • Approves adoption applications. 
    • Adopts out animals according to the regulations of the Stat of Kansas, the City of Junction City, and the policies of the Junction City Police Department. 
  • Supervises staff in planning work, assignment of tasks, evaluation of work performed, preparation of evaluations, administering corrective actions, interviewing and selecting staff, training, and ensuring adherence to safety protocols. 
  • Appears in court as required for animal-related court cases. 
  • Performs positive public relations through assisting with initiating programs, communicating with schools, professional organizations, veterinary medical and animal control associations, and the public for continuing education and complaint/concern resolution. 
  • Assists Animal Shelter Director with budget preparation and financial oversight of the department’s funds and expenditures. 
Additional Duties/Responsibilities
  • Assists with cleaning and operational duties as required.
  • Completes special projects or other assignments as directed by the Animal Shelter Director or City Leadership. 


MinimumRequiredQualifications
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Three (3) years of experience working with a variety andlarge numberof animals in confined areas, specifically an animal shelter environment. 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two (2) years supervisory or management experience. 
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid Driver’s License
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability tooperatestandard office equipment and intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Software. 
  • Ability to make decisions responsiblywith regard topolicies and practices. 
  • Knowledge of policies, procedures, and activities of City and County as they pertain to the performance of duties. 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to use the English language. 
  • Ability to act in a professional manner with all staff and members of the public and respond to complaints and grievances by the public. 
  • Ability tocomprehend, retain, and apply City, County, State, and Federal policies and legislation and procedure manuals, SDS sheets, safetymanualsand warning labels. 
  • Ability to use good judgement and problem solving.

  • Work is performed both in office and non-office settings, including animal shelter, kennel, storage, vehicle, and outdoor environments. 
  • The position may involve exposure to animal dander, odors, waste, disinfectants, cleaning chemicals, noise, inclement weather, slippery surfaces, bites, scratches, and other animal related injuries, zoonotic disease risk, and other environmental conditions commonly associated with animal shelter operations. 
  • Duties regularly include the ability to sit and standfrequently, reach and handle objects, occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds (lbs.).
  • Vision requires close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
