We’re currently seeking experienced Diesel Fitters to join our Mackay Workshop, working on the overhaul, refurbishment and remanufacture of Caterpillar equipment and components. What you’ll be doing:

As a Diesel Fitter at Hastings Deering, you will:

  • Restore Equipment Performance – disassemble, inspect and rebuild Caterpillar engines, transmissions, final drives, hydraulic systems and other major components to OEM standards.
  • Identify Repair Requirements – conduct detailed inspections to assess wear, damage and component condition, ensuring accurate repair recommendations.
  • Apply Technical Expertise – read and interpret technical drawings, specifications and service documentation to complete rebuilds accurately.
  • Deliver Quality Outcomes – perform precise measurements, failure analysis and quality assurance checks throughout the rebuild process.
  • Execute End-to-End Rebuilds – repair, assemble and test rebuilt components and equipment to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
  • Maintain Accurate Records – complete service, inspection and rebuild documentation to support quality and operational requirements.
  • Prioritise Safety and Productivity – work safely and efficiently while achieving production targets and maintaining high workmanship standards.

What you’ll need:

A successful teammate will have experience in:  

  • Trade Qualified Professional – hold a Diesel Fitter, Heavy Vehicle Mechanic, Plant Mechanic or equivalent trade qualification.
  • Rebuild Experience – bring hands-on experience rebuilding heavy mobile equipment, mining machinery or major mechanical components.
  • Diagnostic Expertise – possess strong fault-finding and troubleshooting skills to identify issues and deliver effective solutions.
  • Technically Capable – confidently interpret technical documentation, service manuals and equipment specifications.
  • Quality Focused – committed to delivering exceptional workmanship and maintaining high standards across all rebuild activities.
  • Safety Driven – demonstrate a strong commitment to workplace safety, risk awareness and attention to detail.
  • Ready to Mobilise – hold a current and valid Driver's Licence.
  • Caterpillar Experience Advantageous – previous experience working with Caterpillar equipment is highly regarded but not essential.
