Bookkeeper/Controller – Preschool Network | Brooklyn, NY · $80,000–$100,000
About the Role A growing network of preschools with multiple government-funded locations is seeking an experienced Bookkeeper/Controller to take full ownership of the organization's finances. This role goes beyond traditional bookkeeping — you'll manage cash flow, budgeting, and projections while ensuring full compliance with public funding and Department of Education requirements across multiple sites. You'll be the sole in-house finance lead, working closely with leadership and reporting directly to ownership.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management
- Oversee day-to-day bookkeeping, cash flow, and accounts payable
- Develop and manage budgets and financial projections across multiple locations
- Monitor spending against approved budgets and organizational goals
Compliance & Reporting
- Ensure compliance with public funding regulations and Department of Education requirements
- Prepare and submit monthly financial reports for each location
- Track approved expenses and budgets in line with government contract requirements
Administration & Oversight
- Serve as the sole point of contact for all financial matters across the organization
- Collaborate with leadership on financial planning and organizational growth
- Coordinate with outside tax accountant as needed
Qualifications
- Experience in bookkeeping or controllership
- Prior exposure to government-funded programs or public sector compliance strongly preferred
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple budgets simultaneously
- Comfortable working independently as the sole finance professional in the organization
- Available for regular business hours with flexibility for periodic compliance deadlines
