Role Overview

As a Senior CAD Technician, you will play a vital role in supporting Formula 1's Circuit Engineering activities through the production, maintenance and continuous improvement of our CAD drawing portfolio. Working closely with Circuit Engineers, you will be responsible for maintaining and developing Circuit Engineering AutoCAD External References (XREFs), ensuring accurate and up-to-date circuit infrastructure information is available to support race planning and operational delivery.

Combining strong technical drafting expertise with exceptional attention to detail, you will produce and manage a wide range of engineering drawings, integrating survey information, design updates and LiDAR data to create reliable and consistent outputs. Your work will directly support the planning, preparation and execution of Formula 1 events around the world.

Based at the Media & Technology Centre in Biggin Hill, this non-travelling role offers an exciting opportunity to work in a fast-paced engineering environment, collaborating with technical specialists to ensure Formula 1's circuit infrastructure records remain accurate, controlled and fit for purpose.

 

Main Duties And Responsibilities

• Maintain, update and standardise Circuit Engineering AutoCAD DWG External References (XREFs) in line with race-by-race operational requirements.
• Produce and deliver race drawing XREFs to support Circuit Engineering planning and infrastructure activities.
• Update drawing packages using the latest infrastructure, design, survey and as-built information.
• Utilise LiDAR point cloud data to maintain and enhance Circuit Engineering CAD datasets.
• Assess circuit-supplied design and as-built CAD drawings and integrate relevant information into Formula 1 drawing records.
• Support the processing, preparation and management of LiDAR and survey datasets.
• Develop and maintain CAD drawing standards, layer management structures and XREF best practices across the department.
• Ensure drawings provide clear, accurate and consistent visual outputs for both digital and printed use.
• Maintain robust filing systems and document control processes for all Circuit Engineering drawing assets.
• Liaise with Circuit Engineers to ensure drawings reflect the latest infrastructure developments and operational requirements.
• Support drawing control procedures, ensuring documentation is updated, filed and maintained correctly.
• Update and maintain additional drawing libraries used for internal planning, signage, graphics and operational purposes.
• Design and implement new CAD blocks and drafting resources to improve consistency and efficiency across drawing datasets.
• Assist in the printing, collation and distribution of race drawings to Formula One Management operational departments.
• Review departmental engineering drawings to support quality control and drafting standards.
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of drafting processes, CAD standards and document management practices.
• Ensure all work is completed in accordance with company procedures, engineering standards, confidentiality requirements and quality expectations.

Experience

Prior to the role it would be essential that you have:

• Experience working on civil engineering, infrastructure or construction-related projects producing, updating and maintaining CAD drawings.
• Experience working within multidisciplinary project teams and collaborating with stakeholders across varying levels of seniority.
• Demonstrable experience creating high-quality technical drawings using AutoCAD independently.
• Experience maintaining XREFs, CAD libraries, blocks, drawing registers or document control systems.
• Experience managing drawing revisions, version control and filing structures.

Some desirable experience that you may bring to the role:

• Experience working with LiDAR, point cloud, GPS survey or geospatial datasets.
• Experience producing infrastructure, event overlay, operational or site planning drawings.
• Exposure to surveying, engineering design or asset management environments.
• Experience supporting document control and quality assurance processes within an engineering function.

 

Qualifications

Prior to the role it would be essential that you have:

• GCSE grade C/4 or above in Mathematics and English, or an equivalent qualification.

Not essential to be successful in the role but you may also have the following qualifications:

• A CAD, Engineering, Surveying or Technical Drawing qualification, or equivalent practical experience.
• A Higher National Certificate, Higher National Diploma, degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant technical discipline.

 

Knowledge & Skills

Prior to the role it is essential that you demonstrate:

• Strong proficiency in creating, editing and maintaining AutoCAD drawings and XREFs.
• Strong capability in creating and managing dynamic blocks within AutoCAD.
• Excellent attention to detail when creating, checking and updating technical drawings.
• Strong communication skills to clarify requirements, record updates and collaborate effectively with stakeholders.
• A meticulous approach to version control, drawing standards and document management.
• Confidence working independently on detailed and technically complex drafting tasks.
• The ability to prioritise multiple drawing updates and competing deadlines effectively.
• A collaborative working style when engaging with engineers, surveyors and operational teams.
• A willingness to learn new CAD, LiDAR, survey and engineering technologies.
• An understanding of drawing control, drafting standards and engineering documentation best practices.
• The ability to review technical information critically and translate it into accurate CAD outputs.
• A good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, particularly Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
• A working knowledge of AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude or similar technologies for supporting documentation, research and administrative activities.
• An understanding of confidentiality, professional integrity, health and safety requirements and company procedures.
• An appreciation of how engineering drawings support race planning, infrastructure coordination and operational delivery.
