[What the role is]

The Singapore Botanic Gardens (SBG) is one of the oldest tropical botanical gardens and one of only three botanic gardens in the world inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. SBG is a Division of the National Parks Board, the statutory agency responsible for managing greenery and biodiversity in Singapore.

The Forest and Tree Research Branch of SBG aims to advance forest ecology and tree research and their applications to support forest and urban tree management. Specifically, its Environmental Ecology Section coordinates and conducts biophysical and biogeochemical studies in natural and urban forest ecosystems to:
• Guide forest management and restoration; and
• Optimise the contributions of plants towards improving urban environmental conditions.

[What you will be working on]

As part of the research team in the Forest and Tree Research Branch, you will work with researchers to ensure the successful delivery of projects. Specifically, you will:

• Deploy sensors for eco-physiological and biophysical measurements.

• Quantify site characteristics at sampling locations.

• Perform data analysis and assist in translating research findings into scientific outputs.

• Assist in the procurement of sensors and related services.

• Support research project management and coordination.

• Provide administrative support to the Forest and Tree Research Branch, as assigned.

[What we are looking for]

• Area of study in Geography, Forest Ecology, Environmental Science, Ecology, or a related field.

• Willingness and ability to conduct fieldwork in both natural and urban forest ecosystems.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

• Strong organisational and administrative skills.

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

• Proactive, independent, and able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

• Preferable experience:

• Data analytics, including the use of one or more scientific computing languages (e.g. Python, R).

• Procuring and deploying environmental sensors for research purposes and/or Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

• Using drones and/or LiDAR technologies to quantify site characteristics.

• Quantifying tree sap flow.

• Performing microclimate analysis using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models.

Successful candidates will be offered an 11-month employment contract.
