Head Start Bus Driver

DEFINITION

Under the direction of the Head Start Education Manager or Supervisor, this position is responsible for transporting Head Start children to centers daily and providing assistance to teachers in assigned centers. Work is reviewed for compliance to established guidelines, rules, and regulations.  

DUTIES (NOT ALL INCLUSIVE)

Transports children to and from designated pick-up areas to Head Start centers.

Transports children, staff, and parents on field trips or as required.

Transports staff to and from meetings whenever assigned.

Provides assistance to Education Supervisors with delivery of supplies and equipment to various centers.

Keeps vehicles in good working condition and makes necessary arrangements for servicing.

Ensures that vehicles interior is kept clean; supplied with fuel; lubricants; properly inflated tires; lights and all safety devices are in proper working condition.

Attends meetings and training as assigned.

Reports malfunctions of vehicles.

Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma or its equivalent and at least three (3) years of experience driving in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Ability to work with people from various ethnic backgrounds.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions. 

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

FACTOR 2 – SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

An employee in this class reports to the Education Manager or assigned Education Supervisor who assigns, and reviews work for compliance to established guidelines, rules, and regulations.  

FACTOR 3 - GUIDELINES

Guidelines includes the Performance Standards of the Head Start Program in accordance with Virgin Islands vehicular safety guidelines, rules, and regulations.

FACTOR 4 - COMPLEXITY

Work is routine and repetitive. The Bus Driver is trained to assist with the entry and exit procedures and to ensure that student safely is maintained on the way to and from a drop off point. The employee is expected to work with the Bus Driver Aide and Pre School-Teacher.

FACTOR 5 – SCOPE AND EFFECT

The purpose of work is to collaborate with the Bus Driver Aide in driving the school bus, monitoring the behavior of children, and assisting children with special needs.

FACTOR 6 – PERSONAL CONTACTS

Contacts are with families, emergency personnel, and direct links to the main office.

FACTOR 7 – PURPOSE OF CONTACTS

Contacts are made to ensure that information is on hand in case of an emergency or to make general contact with families and main office.

FACTOR 8 – PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work involves lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling a minimum of fifty (50) pounds. It requires bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, and reaching. Work is performed while standing, sitting, and/or walking. Work requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations.

FACTOR 9 – WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed on the school bus and Head Start classroom. All personnel must have current knowledge of the Emergency Evacuation procedures.
