We know this may not be the highest-paying electrician role advertised in Brisbane.

You will be based primarily at UQ’s Herston campus, with opportunities to work across UQ’s other Brisbane sites. This gives you the stability of a regular workplace without being stuck looking at the same four walls every day.

Some days will be busy with urgent faults, competing maintenance requests and contractor activity. Other days will give you the breathing room to focus on preventative maintenance, inspections, planned improvements and the jobs that are difficult to get to in a constantly reactive environment.

The work is varied, the environment is stable and you will finish most days knowing where you will be starting again tomorrow.

About This Opportunity

The University of Queensland is seeking a qualified Maintenance Electrician to help keep our campuses and facilities operating safely and reliably.

This is a hands-on maintenance position covering planned and reactive electrical work, fault-finding, repairs, inspections and minor installations. You will work across a diverse property portfolio that includes health and research facilities, teaching spaces, offices, heritage buildings, event venues and operational infrastructure.

You will remain connected to the tools while also developing your experience in contractor coordination, facilities management, stakeholder engagement and minor project delivery.

Your work may include:

• Undertaking planned and reactive electrical maintenance.

• Diagnosing faults and completing practical, long-term repairs.

• Responding to electrical breakdowns and urgent maintenance requests.

• Completing inspections, testing and preventative maintenance.

• Carrying out minor electrical installations, alterations and upgrades.

• Maintaining lighting, power, switchboards and associated infrastructure.

• Coordinating and supervising specialist electrical contractors.

• Supporting refurbishments, minor projects and infrastructure improvements.

• Providing technical advice to facilities staff and campus stakeholders.

• Maintaining accurate work orders, inspection results and maintenance records.

• Identifying recurring faults and opportunities to improve asset performance.

• Ensuring all work complies with electrical safety legislation, Australian Standards and UQ procedures.

• Participating in an after-hours on-call roster where required.

What the Role Offers

A Predictable Working Week

You will work a 36.25-hour week, with the option to arrange your hours across a 9-day fortnight.

While urgent faults and operational requirements may occasionally change the plan, most days you will know where you are starting, what hours you are working and when you are likely to finish.

A Regular Home Base

Herston will be your primary base, allowing you to become familiar with the buildings, infrastructure, people and recurring maintenance requirements of the site.

There will also be opportunities to work across UQ’s wider Brisbane property portfolio, giving you variety without the constant travel and uncertainty of moving between unrelated customer sites.

A Varied Pace

Not every day needs to feel like an emergency.

Some days will involve urgent faults, breakdowns and competing priorities. Other days will allow you to complete preventative maintenance, inspections, minor improvements and planned work at a more measured pace.

About You

We are seeking an experienced, trade-qualified professional with strong technical maintenance knowledge and a proactive, customer-focused approach.

You will bring:

• A relevant trade qualification, ideally in plumbing, electrical, refrigeration, HVAC, mechanical services or another related building-services discipline.

• Experience working in maintenance, trades or facilities environments, preferably within a large or complex site.

• Experience coordinating contractors, maintenance activities or minor works.

• Strong technical knowledge of building services and infrastructure systems.

• An understanding of workplace health and safety legislation, codes, compliance requirements and safe work practices.

• Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills.

• Sound problem-solving skills and the ability to manage competing operational priorities.

• Basic computer literacy and the ability to use maintenance-management and administrative systems.

• A current open Queensland Driver Licence.

• A willingness to participate in after-hours or on-call arrangements where required.
