Purpose of the role

To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues. 

Accountabilities

  • Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
  • Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
  • Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
  • Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
  • Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
  • Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.

  • Take ownership for managing risk and strengthening controls in relation to the work done.

Join us at Barclays as an API Software Engineer. As an API Software Engineer, you will design, develop, and support secure, scalable API solutions that power Barclays' digital platforms. Working within Agile engineering teams, you'll help deliver innovative technology solutions while ensuring strong risk management, operational resilience, and engineering excellence.
 

Essential Skills:

  • Java - Proven experience developing robust, scalable, and high-performance enterprise applications using Java, with a strong understanding of object-oriented programming principles, design patterns, and software engineering best practices.
  • Spring Boot - Hands-on experience building and maintaining microservices using Spring Boot, including RESTful API development, dependency injection, security implementation, and integration with cloud-native and distributed systems.
  • Kafka - Strong knowledge of event-driven architecture and real-time data streaming using Apache Kafka. Experience designing, developing, and supporting producer and consumer applications, ensuring reliability, scalability, and performance across distributed platforms.

Desirable Skills:

  • Database Technologies - Working knowledge of MongoDB and NoSQL database concepts, including schema design, indexing, query optimisation, and management of large-scale datasets, alongside strong experience with relational databases and data modelling principles.
  • Security - Proficient in API and application security, including OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect (OIDC), Mutual TLS (mTLS), IAM, secrets and certificate management, SSDLC practices, threat modelling, vulnerability management, and compliance controls. Experienced in leveraging security tools such as Wiz, Prisma Cloud, and SCA solutions for vulnerability remediation. Skilled in application observability, logging, monitoring, production resilience, high availability, and disaster recovery patterns.
  • Docker - Experience containerising applications using Docker, creating and maintaining container images, and supporting deployment processes within modern DevOps and cloud environments.

 


This role is based in Glasgow or Northampton
