Description
An Introduction to Codal
Codal is an award-winning web design and development consultancy that helps enterprise organizations solve complex problems and accelerate growth through elegant, data-driven digital solutions. Our areas of expertise include application modernization, eCommerce, UX/UI design, product strategy, data analytics, and artificial intelligence.
At Codal, you will collaborate with some of the most innovative organizations in the world and work on cutting-edge technologies that push the boundaries of design and software development. We promote long-term success, not just for our clients but for our team, helping you develop a professional roadmap that takes your career to new heights.
We are looking for a Senior Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to lead our test automation efforts across modern web applications and API services. In this role, you will build and scale end-to-end (E2E) testing suites using Playwright paired with Python and TypeScript. You will collaborate closely with full-stack engineers to embed robust test coverage directly into our continuous delivery pipelines.
Who You’ll Be Working With:
You will work closely with Software Engineers, Product Managers, Architects, DevOps Engineers, QA/QE professionals, and client stakeholders across delivery teams.
As a Senior SDET, you will serve as a technical quality partner within the team — participating in discovery, solution design, development, and release activities while helping teams identify risks early and build quality into the product rather than testing it only at the end of development.
What you'll be doing
Quality Engineering
- Partner with engineering and product teams to understand business workflows, system architecture, integrations, and technical dependencies. Independently identify quality risks and define an appropriate testing and automation strategy.
- Architect Scalable Automation Solutions. Design, develop, maintain, and continuously improve reliable automation frameworks and reusable test utilities for modern web applications, APIs, backend services, and integrated systems using technologies such as Playwright, TypeScript, and Python.
- Build the appropriate balance of API, integration, component, contract, data, and end-to-end automation, minimizing unnecessary dependence on UI-level testing.
- Participate in discovery, requirements refinement, technical design, and architecture discussions to identify edge cases, dependencies, testability concerns, and potential failure scenarios before development is complete.
- Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines and establish effective quality gates. Optimize execution through parallelization, tagging, test selection, environment management, reporting, and failure diagnostics.
- Design robust API and integration validation for RESTful services and backend workflows, including request/response validation, authentication, error handling, service dependencies, and asynchronous processes.
- Validate data across databases, APIs, files, and integrated systems using SQL and programmatic approaches. Verify data integrity, transformations, reconciliation, and complex backend processing when required.
- Investigate failures using application logs, browser developer tools, network traces, API clients, database queries, and application telemetry. Distinguish between product defects, automation failures, test-data issues, infrastructure problems, and environment instability.
- Use AI-assisted development tools responsibly to accelerate test design, coding, debugging, documentation, and analysis while critically reviewing generated solutions and maintaining engineering standards.
What you'll need to be successful (requirements)
- 5+ years of experience in an SDET, Software Engineer, Quality Engineer, Test Automation Engineer, or comparable engineering role, with experience delivering quality solutions for modern web applications, APIs, and integrated systems.
- Strong software-development skills in at least one modern programming language. TypeScript/JavaScript or Python is strongly preferred. You should be comfortable designing maintainable software, working with existing codebases, debugging applications, and applying software-engineering principles rather than simply writing test scripts.
- Ability to independently own quality engineering activities for a project or significant product area, proactively identifying problems and driving them to resolution without requiring detailed testing instructions. Ability to clearly communicate technical risks, constructively challenge assumptions, collaborate across technical and non-technical teams, and influence engineering decisions related to quality and testability.
- Strong experience designing and maintaining automation frameworks for web applications and APIs. Hands-on experience with Playwright is strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of testing at different layers, including unit, component, API, integration, contract, data, and end-to-end testing, with the ability to determine which testing approach provides the most value for a given risk.
- Strong experience testing REST APIs, JSON payloads, service integrations, backend workflows, and databases. Proficiency with SQL and experience validating data across integrated systems is highly valued.
- Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines using platforms such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, or equivalent, with an understanding of automated quality gates and continuous delivery practices.
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
- Strong working knowledge of Git, branching strategies, pull requests, code reviews, coding standards, and collaborative software-development practices.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to take ambiguous requirements or complex system designs and independently identify risks, edge cases, failure scenarios, dependencies, and appropriate validation approaches.
