Job summary:

The Health Sciences Assistant Tutor supports the delivery of high-quality nursing and midwifery education under the supervision of senior lecturers and academic leadership. The role provides academic, practical, and clinical learning support to students through tutorials, skills-laboratory and simulation sessions, clinical and community-based supervision, and monitoring of attendance, academic progress, and student performance.

The post holder contributes to the coordination of teaching and learning activities, maintenance of student academic and clinical records, preparation of reports, and provision of appropriate guidance and support to students. A key responsibility is to strengthen the link between classroom-based knowledge and safe, evidence-based clinical practice.

The Assistant Tutor is also expected to promote professionalism, ethical practice, patient safety, respectful maternity care, infection prevention and control, student wellbeing, and continuous learning, while ensuring compliance with the academic standards of SOS College of Health Sciences University and the policies and procedures of affiliated clinical and community training sites.

Job responsibilities:

• Assist senior lecturers with tutorials, demonstrations, practical sessions, simulations, and revision activities.
• Facilitate small-group learning, remedial sessions, and supervised student practice.
• Prepare teaching materials, handouts, checklists, case scenarios, and learning resources.
• Prepare and organize the nursing and midwifery skills laboratory for practical sessions.
• Supervise skills-lab practice and provide timely formative feedback to students.
• Monitor student attendance, punctuality, participation, progress, and professional conduct.
• Maintain accurate academic, clinical, skills-lab, and student follow-up records.
• Supervise students during clinical placements, community activities, and field-based learning.
• Support students in linking theoretical knowledge with safe, evidence-based clinical practice.
• Monitor completion of logbooks, competency checklists, care plans, case studies, and portfolios.
• Promote infection prevention, patient safety, confidentiality, ethics, and respectful maternity care.
• Assist with quizzes, assignments, practical examinations, OSCE/OSPE, and invigilation.
• Support student orientation, mentoring, academic guidance, and referral of students requiring additional support.
• Coordinate communication related to timetables, clinical placements, learning activities, and departmental notices.
• Contribute to academic reporting, research activities, quality assurance, curriculum review, and accreditation preparation.
• Participate in departmental meetings, professional development, outreach activities, and other assigned duties.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSc Nursing) from SOS University is required.
• Successful completion of required nursing clinical placements/internship with demonstrated competence in core nursing procedures and safe clinical practice.
• Relevant experience in clinical nursing, maternal and newborn health, midwifery-related practice, skills-laboratory/simulation, tutoring, student support, or community health is an advantage; strong recent graduates with demonstrated academic and clinical competence may be considered.
• Professional registration/licensure with the relevant nursing or health-professions regulatory authority, where applicable, is an advantage.
• Training in Basic Life Support (BLS), infection prevention and control, maternal/newborn care, clinical teaching, simulation/skills-lab instruction, medical education, or Training of Trainers/Facilitators (ToT/ToF) is an added advantage.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English and effective communication in Somali for student, clinical, and field engagement.
• Competence in Microsoft Office, email, online learning platforms, spreadsheets, digital attendance systems, and basic academic reporting and record-management tools.

• Accurate and timely attendance recording and academic, skills-lab, clinical, field, and student-progress reporting.
• Consistent follow-up of absent, at-risk, or underperforming students with timely documentation and escalation to senior academic staff.
• Well-prepared, safe, organized, and adequately documented nursing and midwifery skills-lab and simulation sessions.
• Complete and timely clinical and field supervision records, logbook and competency follow-up, and placement reports.
• Reliable support to senior lecturers and the department in tutorials, clinical teaching, assessments, student coordination, quality assurance, and academic documentation.
• Professional, respectful, patient-centred, and safeguarding-compliant conduct in all students, patient, maternity, clinical, and community interactions.
