Adjunct Instructor, Philosophy

Do you enjoy exploring life's biggest questions and inspiring students to think critically about the world around them? Indian River State College is seeking passionate and student-centered Adjunct Philosophy Instructors to help students develop analytical reasoning, ethical decision-making, effective communication, and a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives.


As an Adjunct, you will create engaging learning experiences that challenge students to examine ideas, evaluate arguments, and connect philosophical concepts to real-world issues. You will play an important role in fostering intellectual curiosity and helping students build skills that support academic, professional, and personal success.


**This position is open only to candidates who reside in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. ** Due to business and employment compliance requirements, we are unable to consider applicants who reside outside these states.

JOB SUMMARY:

  • Preparing, instructing, and grading all class coursework;
  • Assigning final grades;
  • Communicating with students in a timely manner


SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Instructing assigned classes;
  • Grading all quizzes, tests, and written assignments;
  • Assigning final grades and delivering grades and grade justification sheets;
  • Maintaining a safe and effective classroom environment;
  • Responding to student inquiries regarding course content, grading, and other academic concerns;
  • Collaborating with department colleagues as necessary;
  • Completing other duties and responsibilities as assigned.  

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution in Philosophy, or a Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum of eighteen (18) graduate hours in Philosophy;
  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written;
  • Proven teaching skills with the ability to convey basic concepts and theories in a practical and comprehensible way;
  • Ability to recognize and to respond to students from culturally diverse backgrounds as well as the willingness to make students active partners in the teaching/learning process;
  • Understanding of online pedagogy; 
  • All instructors must meet the appropriate credentialing requirements for the Southern Association for Colleges and Schools (SACS).

Preferred: 

  • A Doctorate from a regionally accredited institution in Philosophy;
  • Two (2) to five (5) years teaching experience in a post-secondary institution.
  • Experience teaching online courses (Asynchronous)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position requires an ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time and to present verbal lectures/demonstrations, walk, bend, lift, reach up, stoop, and carry items occasionally in excess of twenty-five (25) pounds.  Some lifting of computer and electronic equipment may be required.  It also requires manual dexterity to operate standard office machines, such as, copier, fax, calculator, telephone, and other equipment as necessary.  IRSC expects its employees to follow proper safety standards while employed by the College.
