Position Title: Analyst II – Quality Specifications
Job Summary:
The Specification Analyst II – Quality is responsible for interpreting complex industry, customer, and internal specifications to ensure materials meet customer requirements and align with Carpenter’s manufacturing capabilities. Working with minimal oversight from senior analysts, this role reviews, analyzes, and abstracts specification requirements related to chemistry, mechanical properties, structural characteristics, and non-destructive testing into Carpenter’s electronic systems.
The position serves as a key liaison between Quality, Metallurgy, Customer Solutions, Manufacturing, and other functional teams by evaluating specification requirements, identifying capability gaps, coordinating technical reviews, and supporting compliance with customer, industry, and regulatory standards. This role contributes to customer satisfaction, specification accuracy, process improvement, and quality system compliance.
Primary Responsibilites:
Review new and revised customer, industry, and internal specifications to determine applicable material and quality requirements.
Interpret complex specifications involving chemistry, mechanical properties, structural characteristics, and non-destructive testing requirements.
Evaluate Carpenter’s ability to produce material that meets all applicable specification requirements.
Refer specification requirements beyond Carpenter’s capabilities to subject matter experts, including Metallurgy, Quality, Legal, and other technical groups for review and resolution.
Draft and issue exception letters documenting proposed alternatives, deviations, or rejected requirements for customer review.
Input, maintain, and abstract specification requirements into Carpenter’s electronic specification database.
Identify and resolve errors during specification abstraction and re-review processes.
Participate in the communication and coordination of specification changes across multiple departments.
Ensure industry specifications and standards are maintained at the latest revision level.
Follow and maintain compliance with standard operating procedures, work instructions, and job aids.
Monitor and support departmental Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to drive process improvements, achieve performance targets, and maintain customer satisfaction.
Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and support implementation of enhancement initiatives.
Assist in training new employees on basic specification review and abstraction activities.
Ensure compliance with customer and industry requirements, including AS9100, ISO, ASTM, EU Directives, and customer-specific quality standards.
Support interactions with external customers, suppliers, certification bodies, and third-party auditors related to quality systems and certifications.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve technical specification interpretation issues.
Additional Requirements:
High School diploma or equivalent required.
Two-year or four-year technical college degree preferred.
Minimum of four (4) years of experience in technical documentation review or related experience demonstrating equivalent knowledge and skills.
Three or more years of experience in a metals testing environment preferred.
Experience with chemistry, mechanical, magnetic, metallographic, and non-destructive testing preferred.
Experience reviewing technical specifications, quality requirements, or engineering documentation preferred.
Knowledge of material testing specifications including ASTM, AMS, API, NACE, or similar industry standards.
Knowledge of quality management systems and standards such as AS9100, ISO 9001, document control, and contract review processes.
Ability to interpret complex technical specifications and translate requirements into actionable information.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, SharePoint, SAP, Lotus Notes, and other business systems.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple document reviews and competing deadlines.
Ability to work independently and effectively within cross-functional teams.
Adaptability to changing priorities and business requirements.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Technical writing skills with the ability to prepare clear, concise, and detailed technical inquiries and documentation.
Strong interpersonal skills to facilitate technical discussions and achieve consensus regarding specification interpretation.
Negotiation skills to effectively address complex specification and compliance issues.
Understanding of customer requirements and commitment to providing high-quality service and support.
Ability to support continuous improvement initiatives and departmental performance objectives.
Familiarity with auditing activities, certification requirements, and quality compliance processes.
