Job Opportunity: Field Asset Officer – Multi-Utility

Location: Field-based – Midlands & North of England
Salary: Up to £55,000 (dependent on experience)

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Field Asset Officer – Multi-Utility to join a growing independent utility network owner, supporting the inspection, assurance and ongoing management of utility infrastructure across the Midlands and North of England.

This is a highly field-based role where you will be responsible for auditing and inspecting newly constructed utility networks prior to adoption, as well as assessing existing operational assets and ensuring work completed by contractors meets the required technical, safety and regulatory standards.

The role is particularly well suited to someone with a strong background in gas distribution, ideally combined with exposure to electricity networks. Experience across water infrastructure would also be beneficial.

You will work independently across a regional territory, typically visiting multiple sites each day, and will act as a key technical point of contact for contractors, clients and internal teams.

Job Responsibilities

• Undertake technical audits and inspections of newly constructed utility networks prior to adoption.

• Inspect existing operational assets and identify defects, maintenance requirements and areas of non-compliance.

• Ensure gas network construction and maintenance activities comply with relevant legislation, industry standards and internal procedures.

• Monitor subcontractor activity and ensure approved Risk Assessments, Method Statements and safe systems of work are being followed.

• Raise corrective actions and identify non-conformances during site audits and inspections.

• Undertake assurance activities across new-build developments and existing network assets.

• Provide technical support and guidance to subcontractors, clients and internal operational teams.

• Ensure all audit and inspection documentation is accurately completed, stored and maintained.

• Support planned, proactive and reactive maintenance and assurance activities.

• Review and challenge technical, design and operational issues identified across the network.

• Support the continuous improvement of audit, compliance and operational processes.

• Contribute to safety engagement activity, including the reporting and progression of incidents and near misses.

• Produce accurate audit and inspection information to support internal reporting.

• Travel extensively across the assigned territory, typically visiting multiple sites each day.

• Support wider geographical coverage where required, including occasional overnight stays.

Requirements

• Minimum of approximately 5 years' experience within the gas industry, ideally within gas distribution, utility construction, network operations or asset assurance.

• Strong knowledge of gas distribution engineering up to 7 Barg.

• Experience undertaking audits, inspections, technical assurance or supervision of utility network construction activities.

• Knowledge of Safe Control of Operations (SCO) and relevant operational control procedures.

• Knowledge of IGEM/G/5 – Gas in Flats.

• Understanding of relevant gas standards including TD/3 and TD/4.

• Experience working with Risk Assessments, Method Statements, COSHH Assessments and Permits to Work.

• Experience supervising, auditing or setting subcontractors to work.

• Strong understanding of health, safety and environmental requirements within utility infrastructure.

• Ability to identify technical defects and confidently challenge non-compliant work.

• Strong communication and decision-making skills.

• Ability to work independently and effectively manage a field-based workload.

• Comfortable with significant regional travel and regular driving.

• Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise multiple site visits and technical issues.

• Computer literate with working knowledge of Microsoft Office and digital inspection / reporting systems.

Mandatory / Preferred Qualifications

• SHEA Gas

• Safe Control of Operations – Core, Routine, Non-Routine, Form of Authority and Permit to Work

• SMSTS or NEBOSH would be highly desirable

• Relevant health, safety or utility industry qualifications are advantageous

Experience across electricity distribution, IDNO/DNO networks or multi-utility infrastructure would be highly desirable.

Candidates with experience across gas and electricity, or wider exposure to water, GIRS, NERS or WIRS environments, would be particularly well suited to the role.
