Position Summary:

The Florida Atlantic University Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, Department of Surgery, is seeking a highly qualified, academically accomplished, and motivated Associate Program Director (APD) for the General Surgery Residency Program. The APD will serve as a senior member of the residency leadership team and will work closely with the Chair, Program Director, faculty, residents, and institutional leadership to support the continued development and excellence of the program. The APD will assist in the educational, clinical, administrative, and operational leadership of the residency program, including curriculum development, resident education and evaluation, clinical and operative experience, scheduling and rotation management, recruitment, faculty engagement, scholarly activity, quality improvement, patient safety, resident wellness, and ACGME/ABS compliance. 

 

The APD will participate actively in resident conferences, M&M, Clinical Competency Committee activities, recruitment, mentorship, and continuous program improvement, with a particular emphasis on developing technically proficient, academically engaged, ethical, accountable, and independent surgeons.

 

The APD will report to the Chair of the Department of Surgery and General Surgery Residency Program Director and will function as a key leadership partner in advancing the mission and strategic goals of the FAU Department of Surgery and General Surgery Residency Program. The APD will provide leadership in resident education, faculty development, clinical operations, resident assessment, recruitment, scholarly activity, quality improvement, and program development while maintaining strong and collaborative relationships with residents, faculty, service chiefs, hospital leadership, affiliated clinical sites, and the FAU Office of Graduate Medical Education. The APD will be expected to identify opportunities for improvement, develop and implement innovative educational initiatives, promote accountability and professionalism, support resident and faculty development, and contribute meaningfully to the continued growth and success of the residency program.

 

The successful candidate will be an ABS board-certified surgeon with a demonstrated commitment to graduate medical education, surgical education, patient safety, quality improvement, and resident professional development. Prior experience in GME leadership, ACGME accreditation, resident evaluation, recruitment, simulation, or quality improvement is preferred.

 

The position will include protected administrative time appropriate to the scope and responsibilities of the role and will be evaluated annually based on educational outcomes, resident development, operative experience, recruitment and retention, scholarly activity, faculty engagement, patient safety, quality improvement, accreditation performance, leadership, and contribution to the continued advancement of the program.

The successful candidate will receive an academic faculty appointment in the Florida Atlantic University Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, Department of Surgery, with academic rank commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

• MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
• Completion of an ACGME-accredited General Surgery residency.
• Board certification/eligibility in General Surgery.
• Eligibility for an unrestricted Florida medical license and appropriate clinical privileges.
• Demonstrated commitment to academic medicine, graduate medical education, teaching, and resident mentorship.
