Commerce, Data & Identity provides the core product management functions for areas crucial to Disney’s media businesses. These include initiatives and products that power digital commerce, identity, and growth, as well as those that reach uniquely across The Walt Disney Company enterprise, such as messaging and privacy, among others. Additionally, it is responsible for the data engineering, science, and products for Disney Entertainment & ESPN, along with their interconnection with other parts of The Walt Disney Company.

Job Summary:

The Application Data Engineering organization within the DEEPT organization is in search of a Senior Manager. As a member of the Application Data Engineering team, you will be responsible for managing a team that will be responsible for tier 3 support for a wide set of domains including subscription, experimentation, media & sessions, browse, search, and core data areas. The team is also tasked with tactical data pipeline improvements, upgrades, SDLC improvements, observability, and AI recovery capabilities. This leadership role is essential to the success of our Application Data Engineering organization. This leader will be an excellent communicator, extremely technically apt, and have the ability to drive a natural curiosity to improve our data ecosystem. The Senior Manager will work extremely closely with the Director of Application Data Engineering - and will be given complex problems frequently! The Application Data Engineering team is seeking to grow their team of world class Data Engineers that share their charisma and enthusiasm for making a positive impact and driving business value.

 Responsibilities and Duties of the Role:

● Help create and maintain an engineering culture that embraces diversity and fosters trust and innovation in teams

● Build and mentor high-performance teams that focus on stable, reliable, scalable and high performant data pipelines that power the foundational data platform

● Develop a strong technical platform vision that inspires team members to build configuration driven platform tools to allow the principles of the core team to scale throughout the entire organization

● Collaborate with Data Product Managers, Data Architects, Software and Data Engineers, and leadership to develop strong business relationships and drive innovative business driven solutions.

● Be an active participant with all agile related processes, helping develop and refine existing processes to enhance delivery velocity.

● Set engineering standards and best practices for the team, ensuring the production of high-quality code, operational continuity and stability.

● Expertise in programming languages such as Scala, Java, Python that are relevant to Data Engineering.

● Have an affinity for clear communication, prioritization, and helping others in our organization wherever possible

● Proven ability to manage large scale multiyear projects collaborating with multiple stakeholders across multiple organizations

● Exceptional problem-solving, strategic thinking, and communication skills

● Ability to operate under pressure - diagnosing and resolving issues as they occur, stepping into a technical lead role when needed.

Required Education, Experience/Skills/Training:

Basic Qualifications

● Bachelor's degree in quantitative or analytical field e.g. mathematics, or computer science

● 8+ years of relevant professional experience

● 3+ years in direct people management capacity

● Experience scaling and managing a team of 5+ members

● 5+ years work experience in building complex data pipelines. Strong background in both stream processing and batch processing methodologies.

● 5 + years of proficient SQL experience, working with a variety of different database systems including distributed systems such as Spark, Hive, BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift.

● 5+ years of experience programming languages including scripting (e.g. Scala, Python, Bash).

● 5+ years of experience with workflow management tools (Airflow, Oozie, Azkaban, UC4)

● Strong project and program management experience in agile fast paced environments

● Familiarity with data exploration / data visualization tools like Tableau, Looker, Databricks, etc.

● Strong communication skills - written and verbal presentations

● Comfortable working in a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment

● Excellent conceptual and analytical reasoning competencies

● Masters degree in plus

Required Education

● Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems equivalent industry experience
