The Ohio State University College of Dentistry is seeking a Senior Lab Preparator to join the Sterilization Monitoring Service (SMS). SMS at the Oho State University is located within the College of Dentistry and provides testing services and supplies to health care facilities throughout the United States.

The Ohio State University College of Dentistry is the fourth largest public dental school in the United States and it is the only public dental school in Ohio. The college is divided into ten divisions with all major ADA-recognized dental specialties represented.

Under general supervision from the Director or Program Manager, the Lab Preparator performs routine and complex laboratory tests. The SMS Lab Preparator performs day-to-day laboratory functions for the SMS such as: performs spore strip cultures, evaluates and determines results; prepares and interprets gram stains; enters test data on computer; prepare and test media, and ensure sterility of media through incubation; prepares monthly mailings; clean and maintains laboratory; train, inspect and supervise work of student assistants; order laboratory equipment and supplies including media, glassware and other needed materials; may collaborate in the creation of continuing education materials, marketing and other client outreach; assists with special projects and continuing education seminars, events and exhibits.

The successful candidate will be detail oriented, self-motivated, a fast learner and possess excellent time management, organizational, written and verbal communication skills. The ability to take direction and use independent judgment to meet multiple deadlines will be a key determinant of success. Should have knowledge and understanding of HIPPA rules and regulations, and possess the demonstrated ability to organize workload.

This position requires successful completion of background check(s) and drug and alcohol screening.

The body must be able to reach, bend, and stoop in order to perform most lab procedures. The ability to sit and stand for a duration of time is also necessary. Other specific requirements include color spectrum differentiation; manual dexterity/motor coordination, hand-eye coordinator, physical communications; visual acuity and communication/language development. Individuals in this position may be exposed to the following: chemical hazards (skin irritants); equipment; use of sharp instruments; and latex.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 0 years of relevant experience required

Desired Qualifications:

  • A Bachelors degree in microbiology or other biological/health science field or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Knowledge of general laboratory procedures and techniques is required.
  • Experience in a microbiological laboratory is required.
  • Attention to detail is very important; ability to interpret complex rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Experience that demonstrates strong interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to establish rapport with persons of diverse backgrounds which also includes experience working with students, staff, and dental providers.
  • Must possess a professional demeanor and have experience that demonstrates problem solving skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently with minimal supervision.
