WHAT IS THE OPPORTUNITY?
- The CBOS Global Payments team is undertaking multiple complex initiatives (e.g. SWIFT & Global RTGS Compliance, Payments Modernization, Controls & Risk) as part of RBC Capital Markets ongoing plan to improve and modernize payments technology and processes across the organization.
- The Software Development Director will be responsible for a team of Developers in Canada, providing technical oversight of SWIFT messaging routing & conversion, CLS Manager & Fiserv connectivity, market infrastructure integrations, and common services.
- This is a senior leadership role responsible for driving engineering excellence across the Global Payments platform, partnering with business, PMO, and technology stakeholders to deliver scalable, resilient payment solutions and coordinate vendor rollouts end-to-end.
WHAT WILL YOU DO?
- Lead and manage the Canadian-based software development team, including hiring, mentorship, capacity planning, and performance management.
- Provide technical direction and oversight for SWIFT messaging routing & conversion logic, ensuring accurate and efficient handling of end-to-end payment flows across MT and MX formats.
- Own the re-engineering strategy for Fiserv connectivity, including integration design, monitoring, and production stability.
- Oversee development and maintenance of market infrastructure interfaces (ie: SWIFTnet, Crest, Euroclear, CLS Manager) and common services that underpin the broader payments ecosystem.
- Drive architectural decisions and code quality standards across the technology stack, including Java, Unix environments, and vendor platform integrations.
- Ensure platform user interfaces meet functional requirements and deliver a consistent, reliable experience aligned with business expectations.
- Collaborate cross-divisionally with business stakeholders, BSA teams, PMO, and peer technology groups to align on delivery roadmaps, dependencies, and release planning.
- Lead technical coordination for internal and external vendor rollouts, including integration development, environment management, testing strategy, and production cutover.
- Identify and mitigate technical risks, drive resolution of production issues, and champion continuous improvement in development practices, automation, and observability.
- Contribute to strategic planning for ISO 20022 compliance and evolving SWIFT industry requirements from an engineering delivery perspective.
- Continual collaboration with global End Users and Run-the-Bank (RTB) on troubleshooting production and test environments issues ensuring SWIFT flow between applications
- Engagement with global stakeholders across Capital Markets QTS, T&O, and Wealth Management technical and their respective Lines of Businesses.
- Review and comply with firm and industry standards for SWIFT message
- Escalate risk and issues on a timely basis to senior management
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO SUCCEED?
- Significant experience in software development leadership within payments, capital markets, or financial services technology.
- Strong knowledge of SWIFT MT and MX messaging standards, message routing, and translation logic.
- Leading development teams building payment processing systems and infrastructure
- Overseeing SWIFT messaging integration and implementation for cross-border payments, securities settlement, or treasury operations
- Setting technical architecture and strategy for Java-based payment platforms
- Managing the software development lifecycle for mission-critical financial systems
- Ensuring compliance with payment industry standards (ISO 20022, PCI DSS, regulatory requirements)
- Driving modernization of legacy payment systems and migration to cloud or microservices architectures

- Database design and optimization (Oracle, MongoDB)
- Data persistence strategies for high-volume transactional systems
- Hands-on experience or deep architectural familiarity with Java and Unix-based environments.
- Experience with Fiserv payment platforms, CLS Manager, and Broadridge systems integration.
- Proven understanding of front-to-back payment processing, clearing, and settlement infrastructure.
- Track record of managing development teams through complex, multi-vendor delivery programs.
- Experience with vendor integration, API connectivity, and large-scale platform rollouts in a regulated environment.
- Working knowledge of payment platform user interfaces and their underlying capabilities.
- Executive-level communication skills with the ability to present technical strategy, trade-offs, and delivery status to senior leadership.
- Strong stakeholder management across business, operations, and technology functions in a matrixed organization.
- Ability to balance long-term architectural vision with near-term delivery commitments.
- Deep technical judgement paired with a pragmatic approach to risk, resourcing, and prioritization.
- Proven ability to build, retain, and develop high-performing engineering teams.
- Strong technical and financial Capital Markets and Ops background
- Extensive experience with payment processing, end to end systems flows

The good-faith expected salary range for the above position is $210,000 - $275,000 depending on factors including but not limited to the candidate’s experience, skills, registration status; market conditions; and business needs. This salary range does not include other elements of total compensation, including a discretionary bonus and benefits such as a 401(k) program with company-matching contributions; health, dental, vision, life and disability insurance; and paid time-off plan.
