Sr. Library Specialist, Castlewood Library

Two Positions Available, (1) Full-time and (1) Part-time, 30-hours

Supporting the Heart of Library Services

Are you ready to build on your library experience in a role that blends direct patron service with opportunities to support and strengthen your team? At Castlewood Library, we are recruiting for (2) Sr. Library Specialists to use their curiosity, service expertise, and collaborative approach to help patrons navigate resources while contributing to smooth, reliable daily operations.

About the Role

In this essential frontline role, you will connect patrons with resources, technology, and opportunities while helping ensure the library remains a welcoming, well-organized space for everyone. This role requires thoughtful communication, collaboration, and adaptability in day-to-day work. Sr. Library Specialists regularly navigate changing priorities and support coworkers through transitions with clear communication and positive engagement. Success in this role comes from being open to different perspectives, explaining changes with care, and approaching challenges with curiosity rather than a fixed approach.

Key Responsibilities

Patron Assistance and Materials Handling

  • Greet and assist patrons with account inquiries and service needs
  • Provide intermediate advisory and reference help across a variety of collections
  • Promote programs, services, and events while creating a welcoming atmosphere
  • Support expectations for library use and assist with de-escalation when needed
  • Help troubleshoot and assist with library technology, e-resources, and equipment
  • Maintain, shelve, and display library materials using our materials management system
  • Serve as branch display coordinator and help resolve collection or shelving issues
  • Work scheduled shifts that include closing responsibilities and a rotating weekend schedule

Training and Shadowing

  • Provide peer support and on-the-job training to new Library Specialists and volunteers
  • Model library processes and provide positive, clear feedback to others
  • Support learning goals developed by supervisors and help coworkers build confidence in their roles
  • Encourage adaptability and a growth mindset within the team

Learning and Collaboration

  • Stay current on library tools, offerings, and technology
  • Take part in learning opportunities to strengthen your own skills
  • Communicate and collaborate with others to meet the needs of patrons and coworkers
  • Serve as a liaison to district departments or other branches and contribute to projects
  • Support or deliver programs and events, such as Storytime or patron workshops

Community Engagement

  • Set expectations for library use with empathy
  • Listen to patron feedback and share insights with supervisors
  • Reflect the library's mission in every interaction

What You Will Bring

Library Experience: At least two years of experience providing library services, including reference and advisory support

Tech Confidence: Intermediate skills with Microsoft 365, web tools, and library tech support

Peer Support: A willingness to guide others, share knowledge, and foster a positive team environment

Communication and Problem Solving: A calm, respectful, and clear approach to serving patrons and coworkers

Scheduling Flexibility: Ability to work evenings, weekends, and on occasion travel district-wide

Adaptability and Initiative: Comfort with change and a proactive approach to learning and helping

Equity-Focused Perspective: A commitment to access, inclusion, and respect for all

Alignment with ALD Core Values: Collaboration, innovation, and equity as the foundation of your work

Qualifications

Required:

  • Two years of experience providing library services, including reference and advisory support
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook), Microsoft Edge, and Teams
  • Ability to work with people of all backgrounds with cultural humility and professionalism
  • Strong de-escalation skills and a commitment to teamwork and service

Preferred:

Experience working with children or teens
