Maintenance – Refrigeration
Job Description Summary
The Maintenance – Refrigeration Technician (Mid-Level) is responsible for the safe operation, monitoring, troubleshooting, and maintenance of the plant’s industrial refrigeration systems. This role performs preventive, corrective, and emergency maintenance independently and plays a critical role in ammonia safety, food safety, and regulatory compliance. The position supports OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM), EPA Risk Management Program (RMP), and Tyson policies in a fresh food manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
Refrigeration Operations & Maintenance
Operate, monitor, and maintain industrial refrigeration systems, including compressors, evaporators, condensers, vessels, valves, and control systems
Perform preventive, corrective, and emergency maintenance on refrigeration equipment
Independently troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and control-related refrigeration issues
Monitor system pressures, temperatures, oil levels, and alarms; take corrective action as needed
Respond promptly to refrigeration system failures to protect product integrity and plant operations
Perform system startups, shutdowns, and changeovers safely
Complete work orders and document maintenance activities accurately in the CMMS
Support equipment reliability and continuous improvement initiatives
Ammonia Safety & Emergency Response
Actively support ammonia refrigeration safety in compliance with OSHA PSM and EPA RMP requirements
Serve as a trained responder during ammonia incidents in accordance with the facility Emergency Response Plan
Respond to ammonia alarms, leaks, or releases following established procedures
Assist with system isolation, shutdowns, ventilation, and mitigation activities as directed
Identify and report ammonia odors, abnormal system conditions, or safety concerns immediately
Utilize required PPE, including respiratory protection, when responding to ammonia-related events
Participate in ammonia emergency drills, training, and incident reviews
PSM / RMP Compliance Responsibilities
Support full compliance with OSHA Process Safety Management (29 CFR 1910.119) and EPA Risk Management Program requirements
Perform mechanical integrity inspections and maintenance on covered refrigeration equipment
Accurately complete PSM-related documentation, logs, and inspection records
Follow Management of Change (MOC), lockout/tagout (LOTO), hot work, and confined space procedures
Participate in safety audits, incident investigations, and corrective action follow-ups
Support continuous improvement of refrigeration safety and compliance programs
Fresh Plant Environment Expectations
Maintain refrigeration systems supporting raw and fresh product processing and storage
Ensure all maintenance activities protect food safety, sanitation, and product integrity
Work in cold, wet, humid, and mechanical room environments
Be available for off-shift, weekend, or emergency response coverage as required
Education and Experience Requirements
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent required
Technical or vocational training in industrial refrigeration, HVAC, or mechanical systems preferred
Experience:
3–5 years of industrial refrigeration experience required
Experience with ammonia refrigeration systems required
Experience in food manufacturing or fresh plant environments strongly preferred
Certifications and Training
EPA Section 608 Certification preferred or required
Ammonia refrigeration training (IIAR or equivalent) required or ability to obtain
Respiratory protection and emergency response training required
PSM/RMP training participation required
Skills and Competencies
Strong working knowledge of ammonia refrigeration systems
Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, electrical schematics, and operating manuals
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
Solid understanding of PSM/RMP requirements and safe work practices
Ability to work independently and make sound decisions during abnormal conditions
Proficiency with CMMS and maintenance documentation
Strong commitment to safety, food safety, and regulatory compliance
Physical Demands and Work Requirements
Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, and work at heights
Ability to work in confined spaces and mechanical rooms
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with or without assistance
Ability to wear respiratory protection and required PPE
Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call schedules

The Maintenance – Refrigeration Technician (Mid-Level) plays a critical role in ammonia safety, regulatory compliance, and plant reliability. This position is expected to strictly follow Tyson policies, OSHA PSM requirements, EPA RMP standards, USDA regulations, and site emergency response procedures to protect employees, the community, and operations at the Vicksburg Plant.
